Chapter 9 - The Final Reckoning

Victoria’s facade crumbled completely under Alejandro’s icy gaze. The desperate bravado evaporated, and she reached into her designer handbag with a trembling hand, pulling out a heavy, yellowed manila envelope sealed with red wax.

"It’s not corporate secrets," Victoria whispered, her voice cracking as she tossed the envelope onto the marble entry table. "It’s about what happened the night of the fire. My father didn't act alone."

I froze. Elena stopped dead in her tracks, her eyes widening in horror.

"What are you talking about?" I demanded, stepping forward.

"My father was ruthless, yes," Victoria said, tears spilling over her eyelashes as she looked between us. "He wanted the empire. But he didn't know how to bypass your father's biometric security codes to execute the transfer of shares. Someone inside the immediate family helped him lock the east wing from the outside."

The air in the foyer turned glacial. The grandfather clock ticking in the corner suddenly sounded like a series of heavy hammer blows.

"Name them," Alejandro commanded, stepping so close to Victoria that she flinched.

"It was..." Victoria hesitated, her breath catching in her throat as she looked at Elena. "It was Uncle Robert's legal team... working alongside my mother before she passed away. They conspired to frame your father for financial negligence so Arthur could legally seize trusteeship."

"That's a lie," Elena gasped, pressing a hand against her chest. "Our mother and uncle loved this family. They would never—"

"They loved the money, Elena!" Victoria sobbed, sinking down onto the bottom stair, utterly broken. "Look at the documents in that envelope. Bank statements, signed affidavits from the corrupt accountants who died in mysterious circumstances over the years. My father kept them all as leverage against his own co-conspirators. I didn't come here to threaten you. I came here to hand you the final piece of the puzzle so you can finally destroy the rest of them."

Alejandro picked up the envelope, ripping open the wax seal. He scanned the contents rapidly, his eyes moving across the pages with surgical precision. After a long, tense moment, he looked up.

"It’s authentic," Alejandro said quietly, looking at me and Elena. "Every single name. Every offshore transaction. The conspiracy goes deeper than we thought, but this document gives us the legal authority to seize the remaining hidden assets of everyone involved."

Victoria looked up, wiping her face with a shaking hand. "Can I go now? I'm leaving the country. I never want to see this house, or any of you, ever again."

"Calvin," Alejandro said without taking his eyes off the papers. "Escort Miss Sterling to her transport, and ensure her departure from the country is permanently monitored by federal authorities."

As Victoria was led away into the misty morning air, the final shadow of the past was finally swept out of our lives.
