Chapter 5 - The Master of the House

The heavy oak door slammed against the interior wall with a sound like a gunshot.
Inside the grand foyer of the North Shore mansion, the chaotic flurry of activity instantly froze. Movers carrying crystal chandeliers and framed oil paintings stopped dead in their tracks, dropping their boxes onto the imported Persian rugs.
Standing at the foot of the grand staircase was Uncle Arthur Sterling.
At sixty-five, Arthur still projected the image of a distinguished, silver-haired gentleman of high society. He wore an immaculate cashmere sweater, his gold-rimmed reading glasses perched on the bridge of his nose. But as he saw Alejandro and me standing in the doorway, framed by armed tactical guards, the sophisticated mask slipped, revealing the twitching, panicked coward underneath.
"Alejandro? Clara?" Arthur stammered, forcing a shaky, paternal smile to his face as he spread his hands. "What is the meaning of this? Breaking into my home with armed thugs? Have you completely lost your mind?"
"Save the performance, Arthur," Alejandro said, his voice cutting through the cavernous foyer like a razor blade. He strode forward, his boots clicking rhythmically against the marble floor, forcing Arthur to back up two steps toward the stairs.
"You're trespassing!" Arthur protested, puffing out his chest in an attempt to regain a shred of authority. "I'll have you arrested! I'll call the police!"
"Go ahead," I stepped forward into the light, my eyes locked onto his with a cold, murderous fury that made him flinch. "Tell the police that your niece Clara is here to discuss what happened to her sister Elena twenty years ago."
The color drained entirely from Arthur’s face. He stumbled backward, his heel catching the edge of the bottom stair, nearly sending him sprawling. He gripped the wooden banister with white knuckles, his mouth opening and closing like a landed fish.
"E-Elena...?" Arthur whispered, the name catching in his throat. "Elena is dead. There was a fire... the coroner's report—"
"The coroner's report that you personally funded and filed through a bought-and-paid-for medical examiner?" Alejandro cut in, pulling a thick manila folder from his inner coat pocket and tossing it carelessly onto the foyer table. "We have the original architectural blueprints of the east wing fire, Arthur. We have the digital audit trail of the bribes you paid to the local precinct in 2006. And most importantly... we have Elena."
Arthur’s knees buckled. He dropped heavily onto the bottom step, his glasses sliding down his nose and clattering onto the marble floor. The aura of the untouchable corporate patriarch vanished completely, replaced by the pathetic, trembling reality of a criminal who knew the game was up.
"She... she survived?" Arthur muttered, staring blankly at the floor. "I told them... I told them to make sure she never came back..."
"You ruined twenty years of her life," I screamed, stepping forward, the rage boiling over. I would have lunged at him if Alejandro’s strong arm hadn't gently caught my waist, holding me back. "You locked her away! You stole our inheritance, you drove her mad with isolation, and you lived like a king on blood money!"
"It was business!" Arthur suddenly shrieked, his voice cracking with hysterical desperation as he looked up at us. "Your father was ruining the company with his reckless expansions! I had to take control! If Elena hadn't discovered the offshore accounts, none of this would have happened! She brought it on herself!"
"And what about trying to ruin my logistics division?" Alejandro asked coldly, stepping over Arthur’s fallen glasses. "Was corporate espionage also just 'business'?"
Before Arthur could answer, the front doors pushed open again, and two federal agents accompanied by state police officers walked into the foyer, flashing their badges.
"Arthur Sterling," the lead federal agent announced, stepping forward with steel handcuffs ready. "You are under arrest for corporate fraud, federal wire embezzlement, kidnapping, and conspiracy to commit premeditated murder."
Arthur didn't fight. As the cold steel cuffs snapped around his wrists, he slumped forward, weeping softly into the empty air of the mansion he had stolen.

As they hauled him out into the rain, Alejandro turned to me, pulling me into his arms and resting his chin softly on the top of my head.
"It's over, Clara," he whispered. "Your family's ghost has finally been laid to rest."
