Chapter 7 - Shadows of the Past

The morning sun washed over the sprawling gardens of the North Shore estate, but inside the east wing’s newly renovated study, the atmosphere remained heavy with unresolved ghosts. On the mahogany desk, a stack of old leather-bound journals recovered from a forgotten safety deposit box in Zurich lay open. They were written in our father’s sharp, erratic handwriting—diaries detailing the final years before the fire, exposing the deep corporate fractures that Arthur Sterling had exploited.
I sat across from Alejandro, tracing the faded ink with my thumb, while Elena stood by the window, watching the gardeners prune the rosebushes.
"Father knew Arthur was embezzling," I whispered, the words heavy in my throat. "He knew months before the fire. But instead of going to the authorities, he tried to quietly buy him out to protect the family name."
"And Arthur realized he was cornered," Alejandro added, his voice steady as he leaned back in his leather chair. "So Arthur struck first. He staged the gas leak in the east wing, trapped Elena in the subterranean archive room, and orchestrated the explosion to make it look like a tragic accident."
Elena turned from the window, her eyes reflecting a profound, hard-won resilience. "For twenty years, I thought my life was completely erased. I believed I was nobody—just a nameless face in a landfill, a ghost wandering the streets of Chicago. Every time I heard a siren or saw a familiar face, I ran."
She walked over to the desk, placing her hand gently over mine.
"You aren't running anymore, El," I said, a lump forming in my throat as I looked up at my sister. "Arthur is facing life behind bars. His co-conspirators on the board have been systematically purged. The empire he stole has been dismantled and turned into a charitable foundation bearing our parents' names."
"It's more than that," Alejandro said, standing up and sliding a thick legal document across the desk toward Elena. "The federal prosecutors finalized the asset recovery this morning. Every single dollar Arthur siphoned from your trust has been successfully repatriated. As of today, you are the majority shareholder of Sterling-Vance Holdings."
Elena stared at the papers in stunned silence. "I don't even know how to run a corporate empire, Alejandro. I've spent two decades sleeping on park benches and eating out of soup kitchens."
"You won't be running it alone," Alejandro replied with a rare, reassuring smile. "Clara and I are right here. We build this future together."

Before Elena could answer, the heavy oak door of the study swung open. Calvin stepped inside, looking unusually tense, holding a flashing tablet.
"Mr. Vance," Calvin said, his eyes darting toward us. "You need to see this. A visitor just arrived at the front gates. And based on federal security alerts, it’s someone we didn't expect to see out on bail."
