Chapter 3 - The Billionaire’s Secret

Alejandro didn’t flinch under my accusing glare. He walked over to the mahogany bar, poured two fingers of amber whiskey into a crystal tumbler, and took a slow, deliberate sip before answering.

"I didn't know for certain until yesterday," Alejandro said, his voice deep and measured, carrying the chilling authority that made him a feared titan in the Chicago financial markets. "My private investigators flagged a homeless encampment near the warehouse district. A woman matching an old, unsealed missing persons profile from twenty years ago was spotted. When I looked closer at the medical intake records from the street clinic, the description mentioned a very specific birthmark."

I stared at him, the sheer scale of his manipulation—and his mercy—crushing down on me. "Why didn't you tell me? Why play this cruel game with the bath, making me humiliate her, making me treat her like filth?"

Alejandro’s dark eyes locked onto mine, unblinking. "Because if I had walked in here and simply told you, 'I brought your long-lost sister home from a dumpster,' you would have thrown money at a clinic, hired a team of nurses, and kept her safely quarantined away from your polished, perfect life. You wouldn't have looked past the dirt, Clara. You wouldn't have seen her humanity."

His words hit me like a physical blow. He was right. Enveloped in my wealth, my status, and my carefully curated bitterness, I had become cold. I had outsourced empathy.

On the sofa, Elena stirred, her breathing shallow as she clutched the blanket tighter around her thin shoulders. "Alejandro... Clara..." she whispered, her voice gaining strength. "Don't fight. You don't understand who put me in that landfill. You don't know what they're capable of."

I dropped to my knees beside the sofa, taking her cold, scarred hands in mine. "Who did this to you, Elena? The fire... the police said you didn't make it out."

"It wasn't an accident," Elena choked out, tears spilling over her lashes again. "Our uncle... Arthur. He wanted the estate. He wanted our father’s entire shipping empire. He staged the fire, he trapped me in the east wing, and when I managed to escape through the service tunnels, his men hunted me down. They beat me until my mind broke, threw me onto a Greyhound bus bound for another state, and threatened to kill you, Clara, if I ever came back."

The room seemed to drop twenty degrees.

Arthur. Our uncle Arthur, who had graciously stepped in as executor of our family estate after the "tragedy," who had funded my expensive upbringing, and who was currently sitting on the board of directors for Alejandro’s own conglomerate.

Alejandro set his whiskey glass down on the table with a sharp clack. The polite facade he wore for high society evaporated, leaving behind the ruthless predator who had built a multi-billion-dollar empire from the ground up.

"Arthur Sterling," Alejandro murmured, a lethal smile touching the corners of his lips. "The respectable philanthropist. The man who has been trying to execute a hostile takeover of my shipping logistics division for the past six months."

"He's still alive," I whispered, horror and fury warring inside my chest. "He's living in our old family mansion on the North Shore, acting like a pillar of the community, while my sister... while my flesh and blood was freezing on the streets."

"Not for much longer," Alejandro said, pulling his cell phone from his pocket. He dialed a single speed-dial number. "Calvin? Cancel all my afternoon meetings. Bring the legal team, the digital forensic unit, and four armed private security details to the North Shore estate in forty minutes. We're going to pay a family visit to Uncle Arthur."
