Chapter 7 - The Dawn of a New Empire

By nine o'clock the following morning, the sun broke through the storm clouds over New York, bathing the Moretti estate in brilliant golden light.

The city news channels were buzzing with breaking reports: "MASSIVE SYNCO CRACKDOWN AT BROOKLYN DOCKS: VOLKOV SYNDICATE COLLAPSES OVERNIGHT."

Inside the Moretti mansion, the scent of fresh coffee, warm pastries, and fresh flowers filled the grand dining hall.

The blood-stained carpet from the night before had been completely replaced with immaculate cream velvet runners. The overturned tables were gone, replaced by long breakfast settings covered in silver platters and fresh orange juice.

Sophia sat at the head of the breakfast table, wearing a simple yet gorgeous cream wool sweater and dark skirt. Beside her, Lily sat in a high chair, happily eating strawberry pancakes covered in whipped cream, her stuffed rabbit sitting safely beside her plate.

Leo sat next to Lily, showing her how to cut her pancakes with a plastic knife, laughing as the toddler got whipped cream on her nose.

The heavy double doors opened, and Alessandro walked in.

He had showered, his dark hair damp and combed back, wearing a tailored charcoal trousers and a crisp white dress shirt with the collar unbuttoned. The fatigue of the night's war was completely absent from his face—replaced by a deep, profound peace as he looked at the scene before him.

"Daddy!" Leo cheered, jumping out of his chair and running over to hug his father's waist.

Alessandro caught his son, lifting him into his arms and tossing him gently before setting him down. "How did you sleep, big guy?"

"Great! Sophia made us pancakes!" Leo smiled brightly. "Can Lily and Sophia stay here forever, Dad? Please?"

Alessandro looked over Leo’s head toward Sophia. His dark eyes softened with an intensity that made Sophia’s heart skip a beat.

"That depends on Sophia, Leo," Alessandro said softly.

He walked over to the table, leaning down to kiss Lily on top of her head—making the toddler giggle hysterically—before pulling out the chair beside Sophia and sitting down.

He reached into his pocket and placed a sleek, silver velvet box on the table in front of her.

Sophia looked at the box, then up at him. "Alessandro... what is this?"

"Open it," he instructed gently.

Sophia’s fingers trembled slightly as she opened the velvet lid.

Inside sat a breathtaking, flawless six-carat cushion-cut diamond ring, surrounded by a halo of small pink diamonds that sparkled brilliantly beneath the chandelier lights.

Sophia gasped, her hand moving to her mouth. "Alessandro... this... this is too much."

"It belonged to my grandmother," Alessandro revealed softly, taking her hand across the table, his thumb stroking her warm skin. "She was a woman who rebuilt this family after the war in Italy. She told me before she died that I should only give this ring to a woman who possessed a heart strong enough to protect the throne."

He looked into her hazel eyes with total, absolute sincerity.

"You took a whip of fear yesterday to protect my child, Sophia," Alessandro said, his deep voice thick with emotion. "You brought light into my dark life. I don't want you to just be a guest in this house. I want you to be my wife. I want to spend the rest of my life protecting you and Lily."

Sophia felt tears overflow her lashes, streaming down her cheeks.

For three years, she had fought the world alone—working eighteen-hour days, going hungry so her daughter could eat, sleeping in cold basement apartments, terrified of every unpaid bill. For the first time in her life, she looked at the man holding her hand and felt an absolute, unshakeable sense of security.

"Yes," Sophia whispered, her voice choked with happiness. "Yes, Alessandro. I'll marry you."

Leo let out a loud cheer, jumping up and down, while Lily clapped her small hands, covered in pancake syrup, cheering along with her brother.

Alessandro pulled Sophia up from her chair, drawing her soft body flush against his broad chest, and pressed his lips against hers in a long, tender, passionate kiss that sealed their future forever.
