Chapter 1 - The Silver Timer

The heavy metallic click reverberated through the grand ballroom like a gunshot.
The guard’s hand froze on the wooden handle of the kitchen blade. His face drained of color as he slowly leaned back, exposing the clean vertical slice in the five-tier white frosting.
Inside the sponge cake, wedged between layers of vanilla cream, sat a compact, rectangular block of military-grade C4 explosive. Embedded in its center was a digital LED timer—its crimson numbers glowing with lethal precision: 02:14... 02:13... 02:12...
"Bomb!" someone shrieked from the back of the hall.
Panic erupted across the floor like wild fire. Three hundred of New York’s most powerful figures—senators, high-court judges, shipping magnates, and underbosses—scrambled over velvet chairs and dropped crystal champagne flutes in a desperate rush toward the massive oak exits.
"Clear the hall! Move! Move!" roared Matteo, Alessandro’s chief of security, pulling a sleek dark pistol from his shoulder holster while ushering guests out with his free arm.
Alessandro Moretti didn't run.
In a single, fluid motion, he snatched his eight-year-old son, Leo, off the elevated birthday stage with his right arm, and used his left arm to wrap around Sophia Reyes and her toddler, pulling all three of them behind the reinforced marble pillar nearest the grand archway.
"Matteo! Bomb squad perimeter! Seal the gates!" Alessandro bellowed, his voice cutting through the screaming crowd with horrifying authority. "Nobody leaves the estate grounds! Not a single car passes the gates until I give the word!"
"Daddy... I'm scared," Leo whimpered, burying his face into Alessandro’s tailored suit jacket.
"Look at me, Leo," Alessandro commanded softly, cupping his son's head, his dark eyes ablaze with an absolute, unshakeable focus. "You are safe. Look at your hand. You're holding my hand. Nothing is going to touch you."
Beside him, Sophia was trembling so violently she could barely keep her footing. She clutched three-year-old Lily against her chest, her hands wrapped defensively around her daughter’s head.
"Mr. Moretti... please," Sophia gasped, her voice breaking. "Let us go outside... please!"
Alessandro turned his dark gaze onto Sophia. He saw the sheer terror in her warm hazel eyes—not just terror of the bomb, but the terror of a mother who had just put her child directly in the crosshairs of the most lethal family in the state.
"You stay right beside me, Sophia," Alessandro growled softly, placing a massive, warm hand on her trembling shoulder. "You and Lily saved my son's life today. You are safer next to me than anywhere else on this earth."
BOOM!
A muffled, concussive thud rattled the stained-glass windows as the explosive team executed a controlled liquid-nitrogen freeze on the cake detonator twenty seconds before zero. The blast was completely contained within a reinforced kevlar containment box brought in by the internal security squad, blowing out nothing more than a cloud of harmless white flour and pulverized frosting.
The smoke settled over the empty ballroom.
The broken glass, overturned tables, and abandoned silk coats made the luxurious room look like a war zone.
Alessandro stood up, holding Leo tight against his hip. He looked at Matteo, who walked over wiping sweat from his forehead.
"The charge was armed with a short-range radio detonator," Matteo reported, his voice low and tense. "Whoever planted it was meant to trigger it remotely from inside this room the moment Leo blew out those candles."
Alessandro’s jaw set so hard a muscle twitched beneath his scar-lined cheek. He looked down at three-year-old Lily, who was still clutching her one-eyed stuffed rabbit, peeking nervously out from behind her mother’s hair.
"Lily," Alessandro said, his deep voice dropping an octave, softening into a tone his enforcers had never heard in fifteen years of service. "The man you heard on the phone... where was he standing?"
Lily raised a tiny, trembling finger, pointing down the narrow corridor that led toward the private family wing and the master kitchen pantry. "Near the golden door with the lion handle."

Alessandro’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure, calculated fury.
The golden lion handle led directly to the private office of Marco Moretti—Alessandro’s cousin and the Chief Financial Officer of the Moretti Syndicate.
