Chapter 3 - The Shadow in the East Wing

The announcement sent shockwaves through the estate that rattled every servant, bodyguard, and syndicate boss waiting in the lower halls.

By midnight, Sophia and Lily had been moved into the breathtaking East Wing master suite—a grand room featuring a fireplace, a king-sized canopy bed draped in white silk, a private balcony, and floor-to-ceiling glass looking out over the misty pine forests.

Lily was tucked into the softest feather bed she had ever felt, sleeping peacefully with her one-eyed stuffed rabbit tucked beneath her chin.

Sophia stood near the balcony doors, wearing a soft pastel robe provided by the mansion's personal stylist. She looked at her reflection in the glass. Just six hours ago, she was carrying heavy laundry hampers up three flights of stairs. Now, she was wearing clothes worth more than her annual salary, living in a room fit for a queen.

The double doors of the suite clicked open softly.

Alessandro walked in. He had removed his tuxedo jacket and shoulder holster; his dark dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, sleeves rolled up to his forearms, exposing the dark, intricate tattoos that crept up his wrists—symbols of the Moretti bloodline and the trials he had survived to take the throne.

He carried a small wooden tray bearing hot soup, fresh bread, and fruit.

"You haven't eaten," Alessandro said gently, setting the tray on the small table near the fire.

"I... I can't eat, Mr. Moretti," Sophia murmured, turning toward him. "My head is spinning. Why did you say those things on the broadcast? About... about making me the matriarch? You don't even know me."

Alessandro walked slowly across the Persian rug toward her. He stopped two feet away, towering over her, his presence warm and overwhelming.

"I have known you for seven months, Sophia," Alessandro revealed softly.

Sophia blinked in utter shock. "What?"

"You think you were invisible," Alessandro said, a rare, faint smile touching his hard lips. "You thought because you wore a grey uniform and kept your head down, I didn't see you. I saw you every single day."

He stepped closer, his hand reaching out, his large fingers gently tucking a stray curl of hair behind her ear. Sophia’s breath caught in her throat at the softness of his touch.

"I watched you work twelve hours a day without complaining once," Alessandro continued, his deep voice thick with emotion. "I watched you sit in the garden on your lunch break, sharing your sandwich with the stray cats near the kitchen. I watched you comfort my son six weeks ago when he fell off his bicycle in the driveway, wiping his knees before I could even reach him."

Sophia’s mouth opened slightly. She remembered that day—she had been terrified Alessandro would fire her for touching the young master.

"My wife died six years ago giving birth to Leo," Alessandro murmured, his eyes locking onto hers with intense vulnerability. "Since that day, my life has been cold, violent, and filled with men who only care about blood and money. You brought life into this house, Sophia. You brought warmth. Long before today, I was already looking for a reason to lift you out of that kitchen."

"Alessandro..." Sophia whispered his name for the first time, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs.

"Today, your daughter saved my world," Alessandro swore softly, his thumb gently caressing her cheekbone. "I am not using you, Sophia. I am claiming the only woman who has made this house feel like a home in six years."

Before Sophia could answer, the heavy double doors were slammed open.

Matteo burst into the room, his tactical vest covered in rainwater, his weapon drawn.

"Boss!" Matteo yelled, breathless. "We found Marco! He’s locked himself inside the underground weapons vault in Sector 4! He’s got a detonator switch in his hand!"
