Chapter 7 - The Smothering Silence

A loud, piercing klaxon sounded deep within the walls of the mansion.

Heavy, automated steel fire doors slammed down from the ceiling frames around the entire grand foyer, sealing off the main entrance, the dining wing, and the upper staircases in a matter of seconds. High-pressure nozzles built into the crown molding began spraying thick, white clouds of cold, invisible carbon dioxide into the enclosed hall.

Through the heavy reinforced glass window of the library door, Grace watched as Mason and his men suddenly stopped.

Mason raised his gun, but his hands began to shake violently. His lungs gasped for air, finding none. The oxygen levels in the sealed foyer plummeted instantly from twenty-one percent to under five percent. The men dropped their weapons, clutching their throats as their knees buckled beneath them. One by one, Mason’s traitors collapsed onto the marble floor, unconscious, starved of oxygen within fifteen seconds.

Mason fell to his knees last, his face turning dark purple as his hands clawed uselessly at the cold air. He looked through the library glass, seeing Adrian standing tall beside Grace, his arm wrapped tightly around her waist for support.

With a final, desperate gasp, Mason slumped forward onto his face, motionless.

Grace quickly hit the vent release button on the panel, reversing the air scrubbers to flush the carbon dioxide out through the roof vents and restore breathable air to the foyer before it could cause permanent brain damage to the trapped men.

Adrian turned to his remaining lead security officer, his voice iron-hard. “Disarm them. Bind them in heavy steel cuffs and drag them to the basement holding cells. Call the federal prosecutor’s office. I want Mason handed over with full records of his poison dealings with the Moretti syndicate.”

“Yes, Mr. Vale!” the guard shouted, rushing to execute the order as the steel doors automatically lifted.

With the threat neutralized, the tremendous adrenaline that had sustained Adrian’s towering frame suddenly evaporated. His knees buckled, and his iron cane clattered against the hardwood floor.

“Adrian!” Grace cried out, catching his massive shoulders before he hit the ground.

Dr. Brooks was at his side instantly, pulling open his shirt. The surgical dressing was completely soaked in fresh, dark blood. His pulse was weak, rapid, and threadbare.

“He’s losing blood fast!” Dr. Brooks shouted, pulling surgical clamps and sterile gauze from her emergency bag. “The force of the recoil tore the arterial suture in his oblique muscle! I need to pack this wound right now, but I need a second pair of hands!”

“I’ll do it,” Grace said without a second of hesitation.

She dropped to her knees in the pool of blood, stripping off her wool jacket and rolling her sleeves up to her elbows. She took the sterile clamps from Dr. Brooks, her fingers steady, her eyes focused with absolute surgical clarity.

“Apply direct pressure on the upper margin,” Grace ordered the doctor, her voice transforming into that of a seasoned trauma nurse. “I’ll hold the retractor while you tie off the bleeder.”

For twenty tense minutes, on the floor of the private library while the rain lashed against the tall stained-glass windows, Grace and Dr. Brooks worked together in perfect, silent synchronicity. Grace’s hands were swift, precise, and completely unwavering as she assisted in re-stitching the arterial wall and applying fresh, sterile packing to the deep wound.

When the final knot was tied and Adrian’s breathing finally stabilized into a deep, heavy rhythm, Dr. Brooks sat back against the bookshelf, wiping her bloody gloves with a sigh of absolute awe.

She looked at Grace, whose clothes and face were smeared with blood.

“You weren't just a nursing student, Ms. Miller,” Dr. Brooks said softly. “You have the hands of a chief surgeon.”

Grace looked down at Adrian’s pale, peaceful face resting against her lap. She gently brushed a stray lock of dark hair away from his forehead.

“I just wasn't going to let him die,” Grace whispered.
