Chapter 6 - Fire and Iron

The foyer erupted into a chaotic storm of gunfire, shouting, and shattering glass. Heavy crystal from the central chandelier rained down onto the polished marble floor like frozen tears.
Adrian pulled Grace and Lily back into the security alcove behind the grand staircase. Despite the agonizing pain radiating from his fresh surgical incision, his movements were smooth, disciplined, and lethally precise. He fired three controlled shots down the hallway, forcing Mason’s men to take cover behind the thick oak doors of the dining room.
“Dr. Brooks!” Adrian barked without turning his head. “Take Grace and the child to the panic room behind the library!”
“I’m not leaving you!” Grace shouted, her voice cutting through the ringing in her ears. She looked at his blood-soaked shirt—the exertion was tearing his surgical sutures open. The dark red stain was spreading rapidly across his white bandages. “You’re bleeding out, Adrian! If you keep fighting, the internal stitches will burst!”
“I’ll die fighting before I let him hurt you!” Adrian growled, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a raw, primal intensity that made her breath catch.
“You don't have to die!” Grace said. She grabbed his arm, looking into his eyes with absolute fierce determination. “Listen to me! I was a nursing student for three years! I know this house better than Mason does! There is an emergency fire suppression system controlled from the library panel—it uses high-density carbon dioxide to smother fires in the art vault!”
Adrian’s eyes narrowed instantly. “It displaces oxygen in under twenty seconds.”
“Yes!” Grace said. “If we reach the library, we can seal the foyer doors and flood the main hall with CO2. It will drop Mason and his men without firing another bullet!”
Adrian looked at her, seeing for the first time not just the quiet, gentle woman who cleaned his floors, but a brilliant, fearless partner who stood unflinching in the mouth of hell. A fierce smile touched his lips.
“Do it,” Adrian commanded.
Together, using the cover fire provided by Adrian’s two remaining loyal guards, they moved along the inner perimeter of the grand hall. Grace led the way, carrying Lily securely against her shoulder, while Dr. Brooks covered their rear with a compact medical kit and a clear head.
Mason’s voice echoed through the hallway, frantic and enraged. “Find them! Kill the girl! Don't let her leave this house alive!”
They reached the library’s reinforced oak doors. Grace pushed inside, setting Lily down behind the heavy mahogany desk. “Stay here, baby. Don't move.”
Lily nodded solemnly, hugging her stuffed rabbit to her chest. “Mama, the air in here smells cold.”
“That’s good, sweetheart. Cold is safe.”
Grace ran to the wall panel behind the antique atlas globe, flipping open the glass casing that housed the industrial safety switches. She typed in the four-digit master code she had memorized while cleaning Adrian’s private desk months ago.
Outside the library, Mason’s heavy footsteps were approaching fast.

“Adrian!” Mason bellowed, kicking open the double doors of the adjacent corridor. “It ends now!”
Grace pulled the red emergency lever down with all her strength.
