Chapter 10 - A Home in the Sunlight

The golden glow of sunset painted the limestone walls of the Vale Estate in shades of rose and honey.

The grand dining room, once a cold, formal space reserved for tense business meetings with hardened men, was now filled with warm light, fresh flowers, and the delicious aroma of roasted chicken, herb potatoes, and fresh apple pie.

Grace sat at the head of the long oak table, watching her daughter messily eat a slice of pie with a silver spoon. Dr. Hannah Brooks sat across from them, laughing as she shared stories from the new pediatric clinic, while several of Adrian’s oldest, most faithful friends chatted warmly over coffee.

At the head of the table sat Adrian, his glass of red wine held loosely in his hand. He wasn't watching the room as a boss watching his subordinates; he was watching them as a man who had finally found his home.

After dinner, the guests departed, leaving the estate wrapped in a peaceful, quiet twilight.

Grace walked up the grand staircase to Lily’s room. The toddler was already tucked into her bed, her eyes half-closed, her stuffed gray rabbit tucked under her arm as usual.

Adrian stepped quietly into the room, his boots making no sound against the thick carpet. He walked to the side of the bed, leaning down to pull the soft duvet up to Lily’s chin.

“Is the room safe, Lily?” Adrian asked softly, a gentle, teasing warmth in his voice.

Lily took a long, slow sniff of the quiet night air. She smiled, her eyes drifting shut.

“It smells like strawberries,” Lily whispered sleepily. “And warm milk. And home.”

Within seconds, her small shoulders dropped, and she drifted into a deep, peaceful sleep.

Adrian stood up and turned to Grace, extending his hand. She took it, her fingers intertwining with his as they stepped out into the quiet hallway and walked out onto the grand balcony overlooking the ocean.

The sea was calm, reflecting the silver light of a full moon. The cool night breeze blew through Grace’s hair, bringing with it the clean, crisp scent of salt water and blooming jasmine from the estate gardens below.

Adrian pulled her close against his chest, wrapping his arms around her waist from behind. Grace rested her head back against his shoulder, feeling the deep, steady rhythm of his breathing—the living proof of the miracle they had built together.

“I had a call from the estate lawyer today,” Adrian whispered near her ear. “The adoption papers for Lily are finalized. And our marriage license is ready for next Saturday.”

Grace turned in his arms, resting her hands on his broad chest, looking up into the dark, passionate eyes of the man who had traded an empire of fear for an empire of love.

“Mrs. Grace Vale,” she tested the words softly on her tongue, a beautiful, dazzling smile spreading across her lips. “It has a nice sound to it.”

“It’s the only title I’ve ever cared about,” Adrian said softly.

He leaned down, his lips meeting hers in a deep, sweet, tender kiss that sealed every promise they had made to each other in the dark days of war and the bright mornings of peace.

Behind them, the massive limestone mansion stood tall against the night—no longer a fortress built to keep the world out, but a home filled with light, warm laughter, and a love that had proven strong enough to heal even the deepest wounds.
