Chapter 4 - Echoes in the Dark

The ride back to the Vale Estate was silent and suffocating.
The estate sat on a lonely bluff overlooking the dark, turbulent waters of the Atlantic Ocean, five miles outside Port Lawson. It was a massive limestone mansion built in the 1920s, surrounded by eight-foot stone walls, iron gates, and security cameras that swept the grounds every ten seconds.
The dark sedan pulled up to the main entrance at 4:30 AM. Two guards in dark suits opened the doors, their eyes constantly scanning the tree line. Grace stepped out, carrying the sleeping child in her arms, and walked quickly up the wide marble stairs into the warm, oak-paneled foyer.
The house was eerie when quiet. For three years, Grace had cleaned these massive halls—polishing the antique chandeliers, scrubbing the grand staircase, sweeping the library where Adrian spent his late nights reviewing shipping ledgers and property deeds. To the outside world, Adrian Vale was a monster who ruled the docks with iron and blood. But to Grace, he was the man who had found her sleeping in her rusted car during a winter storm, paid off her predatory debts without asking for a single thing in return, and given her baby a nursery with warm sunlight and soft blankets.
She carried Lily up to their private quarters on the third floor—a comfortable two-bedroom suite that Adrian had set aside for them, far away from the formal guest rooms.
After placing Lily under her duvet and tucking the stuffed rabbit beside her, Grace sat down on her own bed, her mind spinning wildly.
Mason was the traitor. It made terrifying sense. Mason was the only person with enough authority to alter Adrian’s medical care without drawing suspicion. He was the one who had coordinated security at the harbor during the ambush. If he had arranged for Adrian to be shot, and then arranged for the wound to be infected with a deadly spore, he could take control of the entire Vale enterprise while appearing to be the grieving lieutenant.
And now, Adrian was lying alone in an ICU bed, entirely at Mason’s mercy.
Grace stood up. She couldn't just sit here and wait for Mason to finish what he started.
She walked across her room to a hidden panel behind her wardrobe—a secret passage Adrian had shown her when she first moved in, designed for emergency escapes during security breaches. It led down through the structural walls directly to the estate’s underground security bunker and private medical bay.
She pulled the brass latch, and the panel swung open with a quiet hiss.
Taking a deep breath, Grace grabbed a heavy flashlight and stepped into the dark stairwell. She needed proof. If Mason was using industrial contaminants from the Port Lawson docks, he had to be storing them somewhere on the estate before taking them to the hospital.
She descended three flights of concrete stairs, her heart hammering against her ribs. The damp smell of stone and ocean air filled her nostrils. At the bottom of the stairs, she reached the sub-basement corridor that connected the main house to the old barn and storage vaults.
She stepped quietly down the corridor, shining her flashlight ahead.
As she neared the old storage vaults near the north wing, she stopped.
A faint light was glowing beneath the door of Mason’s private office—a room that was supposed to be locked while he was at the hospital.
Grace crept closer, her soft shoes making no sound against the damp concrete. She pressed her ear against the heavy oak door.
Inside, a man’s voice was speaking over a satellite radio.
“...He’s still breathing, but he won't make it through the weekend,” Mason’s voice grunted through the wood. “The girl was a complication. She noticed the smell. I had to pull back before the doctor got suspicious, but the toxin is already in his system. By the time they run another blood screen, his organs will fail.”
A static-heavy voice responded from the speaker. “And the housekeeper? Does she know anything?”
“She’s a nobody,” Mason scoffed. “A desperate mother with a broken resume. She thinks I’m her protector. Once Adrian is dead, I’ll clear out the estate and dispose of both of them. Make sure the Moretti boys are ready to move on the waterfront warehouses by tomorrow night.”
Grace gasped softly, her hand flying to her mouth.
Inside the room, the voice instantly cut off.

“Who’s out there?” Mason shouted.
Grace turned and ran.
