Chapter 7 - The High Council's Ambush

The High Council of Syndicates met once every three years in the Grand Continental Hotel—a heavily fortified neutral venue in the heart of the city's financial district.

The room was structured like a Roman amphitheater. In the center sat a massive round oak table surrounded by the seven Syndicate bosses who controlled the city's weapons, docks, real estate, and banking networks. Surrounding the table in elevated rows sat hundreds of lieutenants, legal advisors, and high-society patrons.

When Ronan Blackwood stepped through the heavy bronze doors of the council chamber, a sudden hush fell over the three hundred people in attendance.

Ronan looked formidable in a midnight-black tuxedo, but it was the woman on his arm that caused every jaw in the room to drop.

Ivy walked beside him, her head held high, her midnight-blue velvet dress sweeping gracefully across the red carpet. She didn't look down; she didn't cringe under the burning, judgmental stares of the high-society elites. She walked with the calm, unshakeable grace of a woman backed by the most dangerous man in the room.

Sitting across the round table was Dominic Hale, looking smug and triumphant. Beside him sat Vivienne, dressed in a ostentatious gold dress, her eyes gleaming with malicious excitement. Surrounding them were three elderly Syndicate bosses—Boss Marcone, Boss Luciani, and Boss Vance—who had long been political allies of the Hale family.

Ronan pulled out a velvet chair at the round table, assisting Ivy as she sat down, before taking the chair beside her.

Boss Marcone, an old, wrinkled mobster with a thick mustache, slammed his wooden gavel onto the table.

"Order in the council!" Marcone barked, his sharp eyes glaring at Ronan and Ivy. "We are gathered today to address an emergency petition filed by the Hale Syndicate regarding the wrongful breach of a bloodline treaty!"

Dominic Hale immediately stood up, adjusting his suit jacket.

"Fellow bosses!" Dominic announced loudly, his voice echoing off the stone pillars. "Six days ago, Ronan Blackwood stripped my daughter of her engagement ring, broke our sacred alliance, and seized forty percent of my northern dock leases by gunpoint! And why?! Because he has fallen under the spell of a common servant girl!"

The crowd in the elevated gallery broke into loud, derogatory murmurs and snickers, many pointing toward Ivy.

Vivienne stood up beside her father, putting on a dramatic show of tearful outrage. "This woman was a dishwasher in the Blackwood estate! She manipulated Ronan, fabricated an assault, and seduced him to steal my position! She is an uneducated parasite who threatens the purity of our syndicate bloodlines!"

Boss Luciani, another conservative old mobster, shook his head in disgust. "This is an outrage! A syndicate boss cannot marry a common maid! It destroys the dignity of the High Council! We demand that Ronan restore the Hale alliance immediately, or face full excommunication from the council!"

Ivy felt a sudden surge of anger rise within her chest. She looked at Vivienne’s smirking face, then at the arrogant old bosses judging her from their high chairs.

She didn't wait for Ronan to defend her.

Ivy stood up.

The sheer unexpectedness of the maid standing up at the High Council table made the entire room fall instantly silent. Ronan looked up at her, a proud, sharp smile touching his lips as he leaned back in his chair, letting his queen take the floor.

"Boss Marcone, Boss Luciani," Ivy spoke, her voice clear, melodious, and carrying a surprising, ringing authority that reached the furthest corners of the amphitheater. "You speak of dignity and the purity of bloodlines. But tell me... does dignity include beating an innocent nineteen-year-old girl with a steel-tipped riding crop because she spilled three drops of soup?"

Dominic Hale shouted, "Silence, girl! You have no standing to speak here!"

"I have every standing!" Ivy countered, her brown eyes flashing with fierce brilliance as she looked Dominic dead in the eye. "Under Article 4, Section 12 of the High Council Charter—written by the founders fifty years ago—any individual who sustains an unlawful attack on neutral syndicate grounds has the right to present physical evidence directly to the assembly!"

The room gasped. The old bosses blinked in shock. How did a former maid know the obscure legal details of the Syndicate Charter?

(They didn't know that for the past three days, Ivy had spent twelve hours a day studying Ronan’s private legal library in the West Wing, memorizing every law, loop-hole, and charter rule ever written.)

Ivy reached into her small velvet clutch and pulled out an encrypted flash drive. She set it on the center of the oak table.

"On this drive," Ivy announced calmly, "is the full, unedited 4K security footage of the Blackwood ballroom from six nights ago. It shows Vivienne Hale delivering seven lashes to my shoulder while I protected an unarmed catering staff member. It also contains audio of Vivienne explicitly stating that the Hale family considers Syndicate workers to be 'rats beneath their boots.'"

Vivienne’s face turned white as death. "Destroy that drive! She’s lying!"

"Furthermore," Ivy continued smoothly, stepping closer to the center of the table, "if you examine the financial records of the Hale northern docks—which I personally audited yesterday from the leases transferred to Mr. Blackwood—you will find that Dominic Hale has been secretly skimming ten percent of the council’s collective shipping tariffs into an offshore account in Panama for the past four years."
