Chapter 1 - The Ring on the Marble Floor

The heavy silence inside the Blackwood grand ballroom felt like a physical weight, pressing the breath out of two hundred of the city’s most influential elite.
Ronan Blackwood’s hand remained clamped around the leather riding crop. Rain dripped from the hem of his dark tailored coat, pooling quietly on the polished marble floor. His broad shoulders, framed by the shadow of the arched doorway, blocked out the light from the corridor behind him. At thirty-four, he was the undisputed head of the Blackwood Syndicate—a man whose quietest whisper could liquidate a shipping empire or dismantle a political dynasty overnight.
Vivienne Hale’s diamond-encrusted bracelet clicked against her wrist as her breath hitched. For a fraction of a second, her arrogance fought to maintain its grip.
"Ronan..." Vivienne purred, her voice faltering slightly as she forced a dramatic, tearful expression onto her face. She let go of the crop, letting Ronan hold the leather instrument of torture alone. "You’re home early! My love, you don't understand—this clumsy brute deliberately spilled hot broth onto my lace gloves and threatened me when I corrected her! I was merely maintaining order for your family’s reputation!"
Ronan didn't look at Vivienne.
His eyes, dark as a storm over the North Sea, were fixed entirely on Ivy Lancaster.
Ivy stood unmoving in front of the trembling nineteen-year-old catering girl. The navy fabric of Ivy’s uniform was shredded at the shoulder, revealing a raw, bleeding welt against her pale skin. Despite the pain radiating down her arm, Ivy kept her back straight, her hands folded neatly in front of her apron, and her eyes looking dead ahead—refusing to show a single tear to the vultures filling the room.
Ronan stepped closer. The leather crop snapped in half between his gloved hands with a sound like a gunshot. He tossed the broken pieces onto the marble floor at Vivienne’s feet.
"You speak of my family's reputation, Vivienne," Ronan said, his deep, gravelly voice carrying across the silent ballroom without him even raising it. "Yet you stand in my house, in front of my guests, beating a woman who was bleeding to protect a child."
"She’s a maid, Ronan!" Vivienne spat, her composure cracking under the gaze of two hundred onlookers. Her face flushed a dark, furious red. "She’s a nobody! A oversized, useless servant who doesn't know her place!"
Ronan slowly turned his head toward Vivienne. The sheer, predatory coldness in his eyes made the heiress instantly step back, her heel catching on the hem of her white silk gown.
"She is an employee of Blackwood Manor," Ronan said quietly. "Which means she is under my protection. You, on the other hand, are a guest who has overstayed her welcome."
A wave of shocked gasps rippled through the politicians, judges, and syndicate bosses lining the perimeter of the room.
"Ronan, you can't be serious!" Vivienne gasped, clutching her chest. "Our families signed the treaty six months ago! The Hale Syndicate controls the northern docks! You need my father's backing for the council vote next week!"
Ronan reached out. With swift, effortless precision, he caught Vivienne’s left hand. Before she could react, he slid the eight-carat emerald-cut diamond ring off her finger.
Vivienne froze, her mouth agape.
Ronan didn't hesitate. He dropped the multi-million-dollar ring onto the floor. It bounced once against the marble and rolled until it hit the toe of Ivy’s worn leather work shoe.
"The engagement is over," Ronan stated, his voice flat, final, and absolute. "The treaty is void. Tell your father that if I see a single Hale operative near my docks by sunrise, I will take his northern territory by force."
"Ronan!" Vivienne screamed, pure humiliation and rage transforming her beautiful face into a hideous mask. "You are discarding me for a plus-size kitchen rat?!"
Ronan ignored her completely. He turned his back on his former fiancée, stepping directly in front of Ivy.
For the first time in three years of working at Blackwood Manor, Ivy looked directly into the eyes of her employer. Up close, Ronan Blackwood was terrifying—his face carved from hard angles, a faint white scar tracking through his left eyebrow down to his cheekbone. But as his gaze moved over her bloody shoulder, the terrifying coldness in his eyes dissolved into something dark, intense, and profoundly protective.
Without a word, Ronan unbuttoned his heavy, rain-slicked wool coat and slipped it off his broad shoulders. He draped the warm, heavy garment over Ivy’s trembling, blood-stained shoulders, completely enveloping her in his heat and the scent of cedarwood, rain, and expensive tobacco.
"Mr. Blackwood..." Ivy whispered, her voice raspy from holding back her agony for so long. "You... you didn't have to do that. The Hale treaty—"
"Quiet, Ivy," Ronan murmured gently, his large, calloused hand briefly touching the side of her neck, his thumb wiping away a smudge of soot near her jawline. "You’ve done enough standing today. Let me handle the rest."
Ronan turned toward his head of security, a six-foot-four enforcer named Matteo who was already stepping out from the shadows near the balcony.
"Matteo," Ronan commanded. "Escort Miss Hale and her personal guard off the estate grounds immediately. If she touches anything on her way out, break her fingers."
"With pleasure, boss," Matteo replied, stepping up behind the shrieking, thrashing Vivienne and grabbing her firmly by the elbow.
"You'll regret this, Ronan!" Vivienne shrieked as she was dragged down the grand double staircase, her expensive silk gown trailing in the rain pooling near the open doors. "You’ll both burn for this! I’ll make sure that fat whore dies in the gutter!"

As Vivienne’s screams faded into the stormy night, Ronan turned back to the crowd of frozen aristocrats.
"The party is over," Ronan announced cold-faced to his guests. "Get out."
