Chapter 5 - The Lesson in the Library

Upstairs in the vast, two-story private library of the West Wing, rain began to patter gently against the grand stained-glass windows.
Ivy sat on a plush leather sofa near the mahogany desk, holding a warm cup of chamomiles tea that Ronan had personally poured for her. Ronan stood by the window, swirling a glass of amber bourbon, watching the mist roll over the estate’s pine forests.
"You shouldn't have said that downstairs," Ivy whispered softly into her teacup.
Ronan turned around, leaning his lower back against the window sill, looking at her. "Said what?"
"That I... that I hold your heart," Ivy said, her face burning with heat. "The staff will gossip. And... and it isn't true, Mr. Blackwood. You don't have to pretend when we're alone."
Ronan set his bourbon glass down on a side table. He walked slowly across the Persian rug toward her, his heavy footsteps deliberate and steady. He stopped right in front of her sofa, towering over her, before sinking onto his knees in front of her—putting himself at eye level with her.
Ivy held her breath. Seeing a man as powerful and feared as Ronan Blackwood kneeling before her was a sight that made her head spin.
"I have never lied to you, Ivy," Ronan said, his voice rough with emotion. He reached out, gently taking her teacup and setting it on the table nearby, then took both of her hands in his large, warm palms. "Do you think I broke an alliance with the most dangerous family in the north as a political stunt?"
"I... I don't know," Ivy confessed softly, looking down at their joined hands. "I'm just a maid, Ronan. Look at me. I'm not elegant like Vivienne. I don't wear silk gowns, I don't know how to navigate high society, and my body... I'm not the kind of woman men like you write stories about."
Ronan let out a low, deep breath that sounded almost like a growl.
He leaned forward, pressing his forehead against hers, closing his eyes for a moment as if her words caused him physical pain.
"Listen to me, Ivy Lancaster," Ronan commanded softly, his warm breath fanning across her cheeks. "For ten years, I have been surrounded by women like Vivienne. Women who are hollow, cruel, painted in fake smiles and dripping with stolen wealth. Women who would step over a dying child if it meant keeping their shoes clean."
He opened his eyes, staring directly into her soul with a fierce, unwavering devotion.
"When I look at you," Ronan continued, his thumb gently stroking her cheekbone, "I see beauty that makes every diamond in this house look like cheap glass. I see soft, incredible curves that I dream of holding every single night. I see a heart so brave and selfless that you stood up to a whip to protect a girl you barely knew."
Ivy felt a tear escape her eye, sliding down her cheek, but Ronan caught it with his thumb.
"I didn't fall for you last night in the ballroom, Ivy," Ronan revealed softly, a faint, tender smile gracing his scarred lips. "I fell for you six months ago, when I watched you feeding the stray dogs behind the kitchen in the freezing snow, giving them your own lunch because you thought no one was watching."
Ivy gasped softly, her lips parting in utter shock. "You... you saw that?"
"I see everything you do," Ronan whispered, moving his face inches closer. "And every day I watched you, I hated myself for being bound to a fake engagement with Vivienne. Last night, when she raised that whip against you, it didn't give me a reason to break the contract—it gave me the freedom to finally claim the only woman I have ever wanted."
Before Ivy could process his words, Ronan leaned in and pressed his lips against hers.
The kiss was slow, deep, and intoxicatingly warm. It wasn't the harsh, possessive kiss of a mafia boss; it was the reverence of a man worshipping the woman he loved. Ivy let out a soft sigh against his mouth, her hands moving up to wrap around his neck, her fingers tangling in his thick dark hair as she kissed him back with all the pent-up longing she had buried for three long years.

When Ronan finally pulled back, both of their breaths were ragged. He rested his cheek against her soft hand, looking at her with a raw, undeniable promise.
"You belong here, Ivy," Ronan swore against her skin. "Beside me. And this Friday, at the High Council meeting, I am going to introduce you to the entire underworld as the future matriarch of the Blackwood family."
