Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Past

In the aftermath of the attack, the Russo estate was transformed into an impenetrable fortress. Over fifty additional guards were posted around the perimeter, and Gabriel initiated a relentless purge of Moretti’s operations across Chicago.

While Gabriel fought a war on the streets, Elena fought a battle for Leo’s health.

By week three at the estate, Leo reached a major milestone: he weighed 2 pounds, 4 ounces. His chest drain had been safely removed, his oxygen dependency was down to a minimal nasal cannula, and he was taking milk directly from a bottle.

One rainy afternoon, Elena was sitting in a rocking chair in the nursery, cradling Leo against her chest, singing a soft Appalachian lullaby her mother had taught her.

Gabriel stood in the doorway, watching her in silence.

"You have a beautiful voice," he said softly, stepping into the room.

Elena looked up, flushing slightly. "It’s an old song. My mom used to sing it when I was little."

Gabriel walked over and sat on the ottoman beside her chair. He looked at his nephew, then up at Elena. "You miss your old life?"

"I miss the simplicity," Elena admitted, looking around the luxurious room. "I spent seven years working eighty hours a week, struggling to pay rent, worrying about debt. Now... I have everything I could ever ask for, but I live behind bulletproof glass."

Gabriel’s eyes darkened with guilt. "I brought you into a dark world, Elena. You don't belong among people like me."

"I chose to stay, Gabriel," Elena said firmly, reaching out to cover his hand with hers. "I stayed for Leo. And... I stayed for you."

Gabriel looked at her, stunned by her confession. He lifted his hand, cupping her face, his thumb softly stroking her cheek.

"Elena..." he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "I am a dangerous man. My hands are dirty. If you stay near me, the shadows of my life will touch you."

"I see who you are when you hold this baby, Gabriel," Elena replied softly, leaning into his touch. "I see a man who would burn the world to protect the people he loves. That isn't darkness. That's devotion."

Gabriel leaned in, his lips meeting hers in a gentle, breathtaking kiss.

It was a kiss born of relief, desire, and a deep, soul-stirring connection. Elena closed her eyes, melting into his embrace as his arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her close.

When they finally broke apart, both breathing heavily, Gabriel rested his forehead against hers.

"I will protect you with my life, Elena," he swore softly. "I promise you."

Their moment was broken by a sudden knock at the door. Carmine stepped into the room, his face solemn.

"Boss," Carmine said quietly. "We have a problem. The State Department of Health just arrived at the front gate with a federal marshal."

Elena froze. "What?"

Carmine looked at Elena nervously. "Dr. Keller filed a formal complaint with the State Medical Board. He’s claiming you kidnapped the child from Chicago Presbyterian Hospital and are operating an illegal, unlicenced medical facility here."
