Chapter 2 - The Price of a Miracle

By midnight, news of Elena’s rogue procedure had torn through the administration of Chicago Presbyterian Hospital like a wildfire.

Inside the glass-walled office of the Hospital Board, President Harold Montgomery sat behind a heavy mahogany desk. Dr. Keller stood beside him, clutching a thick incident report, while two hospital legal representatives paced the carpeted floor.

Elena sat in a stiff leather chair opposite the desk. She was still wearing her faded blue scrubs, her eyes heavy with exhaustion.

"Miss Jenkins," President Montgomery said, slamming his hand onto the desk. "Do you have any idea what you have done?! You performed an invasive surgical procedure—a needle thoracostomy—without a medical license! You locked out senior staff, disabled hospital equipment, and exposed this institution to millions of dollars in malpractice liability!"

"The baby was dying, Mr. Montgomery," Elena said quietly. "If I hadn't acted, you wouldn't be talking about liability. You'd be talking to a coroner."

"That is not your decision to make!" Keller interjected, his voice trembling with bitter rage. "You are a nurse! A low-level employee! You humiliated fifteen of the finest pediatric minds in the country!"

"They were wrong," Elena countered, her eyes flashing with sudden fire. "All fifteen of them missed a classic tension pneumothorax because they were terrified of Gabriel Russo. You were going to let a baby die to protect your egos."

The legal representative stepped forward. "Regardless of the outcome, Miss Jenkins, the hospital cannot tolerate a rogue nurse. We are revoking your nursing license immediately, terminating your employment, and filing criminal charges for practicing medicine without a license."

Elena’s heart dropped into her stomach. My license. She had spent four years working night shifts at a diner to pay for her nursing degree. Her license was everything she had. Without it, she couldn't pay off her late mother's $45,000 medical debt. She would be homeless within two months.

"Please..." Elena whispered, her voice cracking. "Don't take my license. It was a medical emergency—"

The heavy mahogany doors of the board room swung open.

The room fell into an immediate, suffocating silence.

Gabriel Russo walked in, flanked by Carmine and three armed men. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket now; his white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, sleeves rolled up to reveal dark tattoos curling around his wrists. He carried a leather folder under his arm.

President Montgomery stood up, trembling. "Mr. Russo... this is an internal administrative meeting—"

Gabriel ignored him. He walked straight to Elena’s chair, placed his hand on the back of her seat in a clear gesture of protection, and tossed the leather folder onto Montgomery’s desk.

"What is this?" Montgomery stammered.

"That is a deed of purchase," Gabriel said smoothly, taking a seat on the edge of the desk. "As of twenty minutes ago, the Russo Development Group purchased seventy percent of the outstanding bonds of Chicago Presbyterian Hospital. I am now your primary financial creditor."

Keller gasped. Montgomery’s face turned gray.

"You can't buy a hospital..." Montgomery whispered.

"I just did," Gabriel replied, pulling an expensive silver pen from his pocket and tossing it beside the folder. "Which means I decide who gets fired, who keeps their license, and who gets thrown out into the alley."

Gabriel leaned over Montgomery, his eyes narrowing into slits of pure ice. "Miss Jenkins saved my nephew when fifteen of your overpaid lapdogs signed his death warrant. If I hear the word 'charge' or 'termination' associated with her name again, I will liquidate this entire facility and turn it into a parking lot."

Montgomery swallowed hard, looking desperately at his legal team, who were both shaking their heads, wordlessly telling him to yield.

"She... she remains on staff," Montgomery squeaked. "With... with a full promotion to Head of Neonatal Care."

"No," Gabriel corrected coldly. "She doesn't work for this hospital anymore."

Elena looked up, startled. "What?"

Gabriel turned his gaze toward her, the warmth returning to his eyes instantly. "You are coming with me, Elena. Isabella and Leo are being transferred to my private estate in Lake Forest at sunrise. I have built a state-of-the-art medical suite there."

He reached out, taking her hand gently. Her hand looked small inside his scarred, powerful grip.

"You will be Leo’s personal primary care clinician. You will have whatever equipment you request, whatever staff you choose, and a salary of $200,000 a year."

Elena swallowed hard, her mind spinning. "$200,000?"

"And as of ten minutes ago," Gabriel added softly, pulling a slip of paper from his pocket and handing it to her, "your mother’s $45,000 medical debt has been paid in full."

May you like

Elena looked at the paper. It was a certified receipt of zero balance from the debt collection agency. Tears welled up in her eyes. "Gabriel... I can't accept this..."

"You saved my family, Elena," Gabriel whispered, leaning down so close she could feel the heat of his breath against her cheek. "The Russo family always pays its debts."
