Chapter 10 - Ever After

Three years later.
The sun was setting over the hills of Tuscany, Italy.
A massive stone villa overlooking miles of green vineyards and olive groves was bathed in golden light. This was the new home of the Russo family—a place far away from the dark alleys and violence of Chicago.
On the veranda, a long wooden table was set for dinner.
Isabella was laughing as she poured wine for Dr. Olivia Chen, who had traveled from America to visit the family for the summer. Leo, now four years old, was running through the vineyard rows with a wooden sword, chasing a butterfly.
Elena sat on the porch swing, wearing a comfortable white linen dress. In her arms was a newborn baby girl—three-week-old Sophia Russo—sleeping peacefully against her chest.
Gabriel stepped out from the house, carrying two glasses of lemonade. He wore a simple linen shirt, his long hair slightly tousled by the warm Italian breeze. He looked completely at peace, the lines of stress and danger permanently erased from his handsome face.
He walked over to the swing, handing Elena a glass, before sitting down beside her.
He looked down at his sleeping daughter, then placed his warm hand gently over Elena’s.
"She has your eyes," Gabriel whispered softly.
"And she has your determination," Elena smiled, leaning her head against his shoulder.
In the distance, Leo’s joyous laughter echoed through the quiet valley as he ran back toward the veranda, throwing his arms around his uncle’s legs.
Gabriel reached down, picking Leo up with one arm, cradling him against his chest while keeping his other arm wrapped securely around Elena and their new baby.
He looked out over his family, his heart full, his soul finally at rest.
"Four years ago," Gabriel murmured, kissing Elena’s lips softly, "a exhausted nurse walked into a hospital room and broke every rule to save my nephew."
Elena looked up into his dark, loving eyes, her heart overflowing with complete happiness.
"And it was the best rule I ever broke," Elena whispered.

Gabriel smiled, holding his wife, his children, and his world close as the golden sun dipped beneath the Tuscan horizon, lighting up a future filled with endless love, peace, and second chances.
