Chapter 9 - The Cleansing

Three months later.
The estate had been fully restored, but the dark, oppressive air that once hung over it was gone forever.
Following the night of the attack, Mateo made a decision that shocked the entire criminal underworld. He dismantled the Valenti syndicate’s illegal operations, signing over control of the shipping docks to a legitimate international trade conglomerate. He used his vast wealth to establish legal tech and real estate corporations, cutting all ties with the mafia governing council.
The Five Families tried to object, but with the Moretti and Marcone families effectively neutralized, no one dared challenge Mateo Valenti’s transition into the legal world.
It was a bright, sunny afternoon in October.
I stood in the newly planted garden behind the estate, wearing a simple blue summer dress. The smell of blooming jasmine and fresh grass filled the autumn air.
Running across the green lawn was Leo.
Now eleven months old, he was walking on his own two chubby feet, letting out happy bursts of laughter as he chased a small golden retriever puppy that Mateo had bought for him last week.
"Slow down, Leo!" I called out, laughing as I walked over to pick him up.
Leo tumbled into my arms, giggling hysterically. "Mama! Look! Doggy!"
My heart filled with a warmth so deep it felt like sunshine radiating through my veins.
"I see the doggy, sweetheart," I smiled, kissing his small button nose.
Two arms wrapped around my waist from behind. Mateo rested his chin gently on my shoulder, looking down at our son. He was wearing a simple white linen shirt, his dark tattoos visible on his forearms, but his face looked years younger—relaxed, happy, and entirely free of shadows.
"He's getting fast," Mateo remarked softly, leaning over to kiss my cheek.
"He takes after his father," I teased gently, turning around in his embrace while keeping Leo cradled between us.
Mateo looked at me, his dark hazel eyes reflecting the clear blue sky above. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box.
My breath caught.
Mateo stepped back, dropping down on one knee onto the soft green grass.
"Mara," Mateo spoke, his voice trembling slightly with deep, genuine emotion. "One year ago, I was a dead man walking through a dark world, waiting for a bullet to end my misery. Then my son reached out his hand for a waitress at Bellagio, and you walked into our lives like a miracle."
He opened the velvet box, revealing a simple, breathtaking platinum ring with a brilliant emerald cut diamond—not a family heirloom of mob royalty, but something new, pure, and bought just for me.
"You saved my son," Mateo continued, tears shining in his eyes. "You saved my soul. I don't want a life of shadows, power, or empires. I only want a life with you and Leo. Will you make me the happiest man alive and marry me?"
I wiped a happy tear from my cheek, letting out a breathless laugh.
"Yes," I whispered, stepping forward. "Yes, Mateo! A thousand times yes!"

Leo clapped his little hands together happily, shouting, "Yay! Mama! Papa!"
Mateo slid the ring onto my finger, stood up, and pulled us both into a passionate, breathtaking kiss under the bright autumn sky.
