Chapter 7 - The Shadows Fall

The night ended in a flurry of legal settlements, territorial handovers, and police clean-ups coordinated by the Council's high-level fixers.

By 2:00 a.m., Mateo and I were riding in the back of the Cadillac, returning to the estate under the quiet moonlight.

The adrenaline that had sustained me throughout the night finally wore off, leaving me feeling completely drained, exhausted, and hollow. I leaned my head back against the leather seat, staring out at the passing trees.

"You were extraordinary tonight, Mara," Mateo said softly.

"I watched a father shoot his own son, Mateo," I whispered, shivering despite the warmth inside the car. "Is this really what your world is? Blood, betrayal, and death?"

Mateo remained silent for a long moment. He looked down at his dark, tattooed hands—hands that had carried weapons, signed death warrants, and built a criminal empire out of fear.

"I didn't choose this life, Mara," Mateo admitted, his tone lower than I had ever heard it before. "My father was the Don before me. When I was eighteen, rival hitmen killed my younger brother in front of my eyes. I had to step into the dark to protect what was left of my family. But every single day... I dream of walking out into the light."

He turned to look at me, his dark eyes filled with a raw, vulnerable sincerity that stripped away all his mob boss bravado.

"When Clara died, I thought my heart died with her," Mateo murmured. "I thought Leo and I were condemned to live in this darkness forever. But then you walked over to table seven with a tray of drinks and a smile... and my son reached for the only light left in this world."

My breath hitched. I looked at Mateo, seeing not the terrifying mafia Don, but a man carrying the unbearable weight of a broken world, searching desperately for peace.

Before I could answer, the Cadillac suddenly swerved violently!

Tires screeched loudly against the asphalt! The SUV crashed through the estate’s heavy iron perimeter gates, grinding to a halt on the front lawn.

"What's happening?!" I screamed, clutching the seat.

Luca pressed his ear to his radio, his face going gray. "Boss! It's a secondary ambush! Victor acted alone at the casino, but he hired a rogue mercenary squad from South America to attack the estate while we were away! They've breached the house!"

My blood turned to pure ice.

"LEO!" I shrieked. "LEO IS INSIDE!"

Mateo didn't hesitate. He kicked his car door open, pulled two handguns from under his seat, and charged straight into the burning estate, his dark coat flying behind him like the wings of a vengeful angel.

"Mara, stay in the car!" Luca yelled, pulling his own weapon.

"Go to hell!" I screamed, kicking my high heels off, ripping the long train of my velvet dress, and sprinting after Mateo into the house.
