Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Well

By the next morning, my life as Mara Vance the waitress was officially dead.

Mateo had sent his men to clear out my small apartment, bringing my clothes, personal documents, and my mother’s old wooden jewelry box to the estate. My manager at Bellagio was paid a quiet, astronomical sum to delete all security footage from the night before and tell the police I had quit my job weeks ago.

I stood in the grand guest room on the second floor, wearing a dark blue silk dress that Mateo's staff had provided.

A gentle knock sounded at the door.

"Come in," I called out.

The door opened, and Mateo walked in, carrying little Leo in his arms. The baby was dressed in a soft yellow onesie, squirming excitedly. The moment Leo saw me, he let out a joyful squeal and reached out both arms.

"Mama! Mama!" Leo babbled happily.

My heart stopped.

Mateo froze in his tracks, staring at his son in utter shock.

"He... he hasn't spoken a single word yet," Mateo whispered, his voice thick with stunned emotion. "The doctors said he had developmental speech delay due to trauma..."

"He didn't mean... he's just babbling," I said quickly, feeling a blush warm my cheeks as I stepped forward and took Leo into my arms. "He doesn't know what the word means."

"He knows," Mateo said quietly, watching me gently kiss Leo’s chubby cheek. "Children know blood better than adults do."

Before we could say anything further, Luca burst into the room without knocking. His face was pale, his shirt covered in sweat.

"Boss," Luca gasped, breathing heavily. "We have a massive problem."

"What is it, Luca?" Mateo asked, instantly reverting back to his cold, commanding persona.

"The water supply to the eastern estate wing has been compromised," Luca reported quickly. "Three of our perimeter guards just collapsed with severe internal hemorrhaging. Someone poisoned the main cistern two hours ago."

Mateo’s eyes narrowed into slits of deadly rage. "A traitor inside the house."

"And there's more," Luca added, his voice dropping into an anxious whisper. "Victor Marcone has called an emergency meeting of the Five Families at the Grand Casino downtown for 8:00 p.m. tonight. He claims he has proof that you are harboring an illegal Moretti asset and that you murdered your own wife to seize total control of the territory."

"He's setting a trap," Mateo growled, pacing the floor like an apex predator. "If I don't show up to the Council meeting, the other four families will vote to strip the Valenti family of our commission rights and declare open war. If I do show up, Victor will launch an ambush."

"You can't go!" I blurted out, holding Leo tightly against my chest. "It's suicide!"

Mateo stopped pacing and looked at me. A subtle, dangerous smile touched his lips.

"In our world, Mara, a trap is only dangerous if you walk into it blind," Mateo said coldly. "Victor thinks I am defending a secret. He doesn't know that my secret is ready to fight back."

"What do you mean?" I asked, a sudden chill running down my spine.

"Tonight, you are coming with me to the Grand Casino," Mateo declared. "You are going to sit at the high-stakes table wearing Clara’s diamond necklace. We are going to show the Five Families that the Moretti bloodline did not die—and that anyone who tries to touch my family will be erased from existence."
