Chapter 8 - The Healing Season

Spring arrived in Chicago with unprecedented warmth. The frozen ice that had gripped the city melted away, replaced by blooming tulips, green grass, and warm breezes blowing off Lake Michigan.
The lakeside estate in Oak Brook was completely transformed.
The high iron security fences remained, but they were now covered in blooming red roses and green ivy. The front lawn, once a battlefield, was now filled with the sound of laughter and birdsong.
Evelyn Ashworth sat in a comfortable wicker wheelchair on the broad sunlit porch, wrapped in a light cotton shawl. Her skin was plump, warm, and healthy; her clouded eyes had been successfully treated with laser surgery, restoring sixty percent of her vision.
Beside her sat Maya, reviewing the architectural plans for the Evelyn Ashworth Foundation for Homeless Seniors—a twenty-million-dollar modern facility currently being built in downtown Chicago, fully funded by the liquidated assets of Julian Vane and Cole’s former underworld holdings.
"Look at this, Mrs. Ashworth," Maya smiled, showing her a rendering of the building's garden courtyard. "The greenhouse will have fifty varieties of roses, just like you wanted."
"It's beautiful, sweetheart," Evelyn smiled, taking Maya’s hand. "You know, you don't have to call me Mrs. Ashworth anymore. You're like a daughter to me."
Maya flushed with warm emotion, squeezing the elder woman's hand. "Thank you... Mom."
Across the lawn, a loud splash echoed from the lake.
Moose was splashing merrily in the shallow water, chasing a red rubber ball thrown by Cole.
Cole walked up the lawn toward the porch, dressed in a casual linen shirt and jeans, looking ten years younger. The sharp, cold armor he had worn for fifteen years was gone, replaced by a calm, grounded peace.
He climbed the wooden porch steps, sat down on the edge of the railing, and kissed his mother’s cheek.
"How are you feeling today, Mom?" Cole asked gently.
"I feel rich, my boy," Evelyn said, leaning her head against his shoulder. "Truly rich."
Cole looked at Maya, who smiled warmly at him.
Over the past four months, as they worked together to build the foundation and care for Evelyn, a deep, beautiful bond had blossomed between Cole and Maya—a relationship built on mutual respect, shared healing, and profound gratitude.

"The federal court finalized Julian Vane's sentencing this morning," Cole informed them quietly. "Thirty years without parole. The money stolen from the estate has been fully recovered and transferred to the foundation."
Evelyn took a long, peaceful breath of the spring air. "May God have mercy on his soul. He gave us a terrible winter, Cole... but he brought us to this spring."
