Chapter 4 - A Mother's Awakening

The sun broke over Lake Michigan the following morning, casting long beams of pale gold light through the windows of the hospital suite.
Evelyn Ashworth slowly opened her eyes.
She wasn't on the cold, damp concrete of the alleyway. She wasn't wrapped in wet rags. She was lying in a bed softer than anything she had felt in eighty years, bathed in warm sunlight, surrounded by the faint scent of fresh lilies.
Sitting in a leather armchair right beside her bed was her son.
Cole had not slept. He had washed his face, changed into a comfortable sweater, and had sat by her side for five straight hours, watching her heart rate monitor. Moose was asleep on the rug beside him, his massive paw resting against the edge of the bed frame.
Evelyn reached out her thin, trembling hand.
Cole caught it instantly, pressing her hand against his face, closing his eyes as tears finally broke through his iron composure, rolling down his cheeks onto her knuckles.
"Cole..." she whispered, her voice still raspy, but far stronger than the night before.
"I'm here, Mom," Cole sobbed softly, kissing her frail fingers. "I'm right here. I'm so sorry. God, Mom, I'm so sorry..."
Evelyn stroked his short dark hair with her thumbs, her eyes filled with boundless, unconditional maternal forgiveness. "You came back for me, my boy. Moose brought you back."
"I should never have left," Cole said, looking up into her clouded eyes. "I thought... I thought building an empire and sending money was enough. I was a coward, Mom. I was terrified of facing the past, so I hid behind my fortune."
Evelyn shook her head slowly. "Your father was a cruel man, Cole. The night you walked out eight years ago... you were protecting me from his debts. You took his burden on your shoulders so I wouldn't have to face those men."
Cole swallowed hard. The fight that had driven him away eight years ago—the night he took over the pawn shop—had been to pay off his late father’s lethal debts to the local mob. He had walked into the dark world so his mother wouldn't be harmed, but in doing so, he had isolated himself in that darkness.
"I built a kingdom of garbage, Mom," Cole said quietly. "And it almost killed you."
The door opened softly, and Maya stepped into the room holding a tray of fresh soup and warm tea.
Evelyn’s face instantly lit up with a brilliant smile. "Maya! My guardian angel!"
Maya smiled warmly, setting the tray on the bedside table. "How are you feeling, Mrs. Ashworth?"
"I feel like I've been born again," Evelyn said, reaching out to clasp Maya's hand. She looked between Cole and Maya, her sharp intuition returning. "Cole... did you take care of this sweet girl?"
"She has a home, safety, and a future, Mom," Cole promised. "For as long as she lives."
Evelyn squeezed both their hands. "Good. Now... get me out of this hospital. I want to go home."

Cole looked at Marcus, who stood near the door.
"Prepare the lakeside estate in Oak Brook," Cole commanded. "The one with the rose garden and the heated sunroom. That is my mother's new home."
