Chapter 7 - The Downfall of Vance

Two hours later, the rain began to fall over the West Side of Chicago, turning the snow into gray, slushy mud.

Dominic Vance sat inside his private club—a dim, mahogany-paneled sanctuary filled with cigar smoke—waiting for his son's call to confirm that Evelyn Ashworth was in their possession.

Instead, the front double doors of the club were breached with a thunderous blast.

The heavy oak doors shattered inward, showering the plush red carpet with splinters.

Cole Ashworth walked through the smoke, dressed in his long black coat, his boots crunching over the broken glass. He tossed Paul Vance forward onto the rug at his father's feet like a sack of dead weight.

Dominic Vance bolted up from his leather armchair, his hand reaching for his desk drawer, but before his fingers could touch the wood, Marcus had a laser sight targeted squarely between Dominic's eyes.

"Don't do it, Dominic," Cole said softly, walking slowly toward the desk.

Dominic looked at his wounded son groaning on the floor, then up at Cole's gray steel eyes. He realized instantly that his grand gamble had failed catastrophically.

"Cole..." Dominic stammered, his voice raspy with panic. "We can negotiate! The docks... you can have seventy percent of the revenue!"

Cole stopped at the edge of the desk. He didn't pull a weapon. He didn't raise his voice. He reached into his coat pocket and placed a black leather tablet on the mahogany desk.

"That tablet is connected to the federal district attorney's office," Cole said. "In thirty seconds, a complete dossier detailing your syndicate's tax evasion, human trafficking lines, and illegal firearms distribution will be uploaded directly to the Chief of Police."

Dominic’s mouth fell open. "You... you went to the feds?! You're a mob boss! You don't call the law!"

"I was a mob boss, Dominic," Cole said, looking down at his own hands—hands that had carried the weight of crime for fifteen years. "I built an empire out of dark money because I thought it was the only way to protect what I loved. But I learned three days ago that dark money buys nothing except betrayal and misery."

Cole leaned across the desk, looking directly into Dominic's soul.

"I surrendered all my illegal assets to the state twenty minutes ago," Cole revealed, a small, triumphant smile touching his lips. "I am clean. My mother is safe. My company is legitimate. But you? You're going to spend the rest of your life in a maximum-security federal prison."

Outside the club, sirens began to wail—dozens of them, echoing through the city streets, closing in on the West Side.

Dominic sank back into his leather chair, his hands trembling as he realized he had been utterly defeated not by a gun, but by a man who had chosen to step out of the shadows.

Cole turned his back on Dominic Vance and walked out into the clean rain.
