Chapter 10 - The Warmth of Home

Christmas Eve arrived in Oak Brook under a gentle, powdery snowfall that draped the lake house in a quiet, magical blanket of white.

Inside the grand living room, a massive pine tree stood near the stone fireplace, decorated with hundreds of twinkling golden lights and handmade ornaments. The scent of roasted turkey, cinnamon, and fresh pine filled the cozy air.

Evelyn sat in a large rocking chair near the fire, holding a mug of warm mulled cider, watching her family.

Marcus, now serving as the head of legitimate estate security and community outreach, was sitting at the dining table, laughing loudly as he played a game of chess with one of the foundation's senior residents who had joined them for dinner.

Near the window, Maya and Cole stood together, looking out at the snow falling gently over the lake.

Maya was dressed in a soft cream velvet dress, her hand resting gently over her stomach—where a tiny, new life was quietly growing, a new generation of the Ashworth family due in the summer.

Cole wrapped his arms around Maya from behind, resting his chin gently on her shoulder, feeling the deep, rhythm of her breathing.

"What are you thinking about?" Maya whispered, resting her hands over his.

"I was thinking about eight years ago," Cole murmured softly, looking at his mother rock peacefully by the fire. "And I was thinking about that frozen sidewalk four hundred nights ago."

"It brought us here," Maya said, turning in his arms to look up into his warm gray eyes. "It brought you home."

Moose sauntered over from the rug, letting out a soft sigh, and rested his massive head against Cole’s knee. Cole leaned down, stroking the dog’s scarred, velvet ears.

"Good boy, Moose," Cole whispered. "You saved us all, didn't you?"

Evelyn looked over at her son, her daughter-in-law, and her faithful dog, her heart full to overflowing.

"Cole, darling," Evelyn called out softly from her chair. "Come sit by the fire. Dinner is almost ready."

"Coming, Mom," Cole smiled.

He took Maya’s hand, walked over to the hearth, and sat down on the rug beside his mother’s chair, pulling the warm wool blanket over all their knees.

Outside, the snow fell softly against the dark Chicago night, but inside the house, there was only warmth, peace, and a love that had proven strong enough to melt the coldest winter.
