Chapter 8 - The Midnight Breach

The clock on the grand grandfather clock in the foyer struck midnight, casting long, solemn shadows across the marble floors of the Gold Coast estate. Outside, a heavy, creeping fog rolled off Lake Michigan, swallowing the streetlamps and turning the manicured lawns into an eerie expanse of grey mist.
At the perimeter wall, three silent shadows vaulted over the wrought-iron spikes with the practiced grace of professional hitmen. Dressed in black tactical stealth gear, Luca Moretti led his two elite operatives toward the rear service entrance of the mansion.
"Easy money," Moretti whispered into his comm-piece, flashing a predatory grin. "Steel’s gone soft with those brats inside. Security is sleeping."
They reached the heavy oak service door. Moretti pulled a micro-sonic lockpick from his vest, sliding it into the smart-lock cylinder. Within three seconds, the green light blinked.
The door clicked open.
They slipped inside, moving in a tight, disciplined wedge through the dark hallway. The interior was dead silent, save for the faint ticking of the grandfather clock in the distance.
Moretti raised his silenced pistol, rounding the corner toward the main staircase that led up to the private family quarters on the second floor.
"Clear," whispered the operative behind him.
"Move," Moretti grunted.
They took two steps onto the first carpeted stair—and then every light in the mansion instantly flooded with blinding white brilliance.
Simultaneously, the heavy steel security shutters slammed down over every window and door with a deafening, pneumatic crash, trapping the intruders inside like rats in a titanium cage.
Moretti froze, dropping his weapon down in sheer panic. "It’s a trap!"
"You're a long way from New York, Luca," a voice echoed from the shadows of the balcony above.
Moretti whipped his head up. Standing at the top of the grand staircase, looking down with absolute, chilling contempt, was Ryker Steel. He wasn't wearing a tactical vest. He wore a simple black cashmere sweater, his hands resting casually in his pockets, flanked by Silas and six armed enforcers who had emerged silently from the corridor alcoves.
"Steel..." Moretti choked out, raising his hands slowly. "We... we just wanted to talk. A business proposition from Don Falcone—"
"Your boss is an idiot if he thought sending a errand boy into my house would change the balance of power," Ryker said, walking slowly down the stairs, his boots clicking rhythmically against the hardwood. "You came here looking to test my family. You wanted to see if the ghost of the Kade-Steel alliance had lost its fangs."
May you like
Moretti trembled, sweat pouring down his neck. "Please... I’m just following orders—"
"Orders are for soldiers," Ryker stopped three steps above them, looking down like a king sentencing peasants. "You are trespassers in a house protected by a blood debt. Silas, tie them up and throw them in the basement holding cells. Call Don Falcone on a secure line tomorrow morning, and tell him if he ever sends another rat across my state line, I won't just send his men back—I'll send him the bill for their funerals."
