Chapter 10 - The Last Sunset

The autumn air had begun to cool the streets of Chicago, painting the leaves outside the Gold Coast estate in brilliant shades of amber, copper, and deep crimson.
On the sprawling back lawn, a massive, professional-grade wooden playset—complete with a climbing wall, a sliding board, and a shaded lookout tower—stood proudly against the backdrop of the massive stone mansion.
Owen and Lily were scaling the climbing wall like two fearless mountain goats, their giggles echoing across the manicured gardens as Silas stood nearby tossing the golden retriever’s tennis ball.
Ryker sat on the wide stone porch steps, resting his elbows on his knees, watching them with a profound, unshakeable peace settling deep into his bones.
The scars across his hands still twitched when the cold wind blew from the lake, reminding him of the fire, the blood, and the stranger who had dragged him out of the wreckage a lifetime ago. But those scars no longer felt like a curse. They felt like a badge of honor—a permanent connection to a debt that had finally been paid in full, with interest, through the laughter of two children who would never have to know the darkness of the world outside these gates.
Lily suddenly scrambled down the slide, sprinting across the grass straight toward the porch. She didn't stop until she reached Ryker, throwing her arms around his neck in a fierce, impulsive hug.
Ryker froze for a fraction of a second—physical affection still felt like a foreign language to a man raised in the crucible of the Chicago underworld—before slowly, carefully wrapping his powerful arms around her small frame.
"Uncle Ryker," Lily whispered softly against his shoulder, her breath warm against his collar. "Are you going to stay here forever?"
Ryker looked past her golden curls toward Owen, who was waving enthusiastically from the top of the tower, and then out toward the heavy iron gates that guarded their sanctuary from the storms of the city.
He tightened his embrace, burying his face gently in her hair as the golden sun dipped below the Chicago skyline, casting a brilliant, warm glow over the entire estate.

"Yeah, bug," Ryker murmured, his voice thick with a fierce, unbreakable conviction. "I’m not going anywhere."
The empire of blood and silence was gone. In its place stood a home. And for the most feared man in Chicago, that was the greatest victory he had ever known.
