Chapter 4 - The Citadel of Glass

The headquarters of Vance Global Logistics towered forty stories above downtown Chicago, a gleaming spire of reflective glass and steel that symbolized corporate dominance. Inside the top-floor executive suite, Marcus Vance paced frantically behind his expansive glass desk, slamming his fist down repeatedly on a secure red intercom button.

"Security! Get up here! Where is my detail?!" Marcus screamed into the receiver.

Static hissed back at him. Downstairs, the entire lobby security grid had gone dark in less than thirty seconds. No alarms. No gunfire. Just a clean, algorithmic shutdown executed with terrifying precision.

The heavy mahogany double doors of the executive suite did not merely open—they blew inward in a cloud of splintered wood and crushed brass hinges.

Marcus stumbled backward, tripping over his designer executive chair and crashing hard onto the white marble floor.

Through the ruined doorway walked Ryker Steel. He wasn't wearing his heavy overcoat now; he wore a sharp, tailored black three-piece suit, his sleeves rolled up slightly to reveal the jagged, silvery scars crisscrossing his powerful forearms. Behind him stepped Silas, carrying a secure laptop, followed by two armed enforcers who efficiently secured the perimeter doors.

"Marcus," Ryker greeted, his voice echoing off the high glass ceilings. "Nice office. Remind me how many parking tickets you had to pay to afford it?"

"You... you can't be here!" Marcus gasped, scrambling crab-like away from Ryker’s advancing boots. "This is private property! I'll call the mayor! I'll call the FBI!"

"Call whoever you want," Ryker replied calmly, pulling a heavy silver cigarette case from his breast pocket, flicking it open, and pulling out a single unfiltered cigarette without lighting it. "The mayor is currently reviewing a federal audit of your offshore shell companies, and the FBI has already seized your shipping manifests at the port."

Marcus swallowed hard, sweat pouring down his pale face. "What do you want, Ryker? Money? Property? Name your price! I can give you half my portfolio!"

Ryker stopped walking, standing directly over the cowering developer. He crouched down, bringing his face level with Marcus’s terrified eyes.

"You tried to steal a dead man's garage," Ryker whispered, his voice dangerously low. "You tried to throw two five-year-old children onto the streets to cover up corporate espionage. And most importantly... you threatened the children of the man who saved my life."

"I didn't know!" Marcus sobbed, raising his hands defensively. "Vanessa said—"

"Vanessa is currently scrubbing floors at a state penitentiary work camp," Ryker interrupted coldly. "And you..." Ryker stood up slowly, gesturing to Silas. "Silas, plug the drive into his mainframe. Let’s show Mr. Vance what happens when you steal intellectual property from a genius."

Silas strode forward, snapping open the secure laptop and jacking Julian’s titanium drive directly into Vance’s central server port. A line of green cascading code lit up the darkened room.

"Master override initiated," Silas announced clinically. "All Vance Global assets, land titles, and subsidiary accounts are now transferring into the Owen and Lily Callahan Trust."

Marcus let out a strangled, animalistic cry of despair. "No! That’s my entire empire! You've ruined me!"

"No, Marcus," Ryker corrected, turning his back on the cowering man as he walked toward the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the glittering Chicago skyline. "You were never an empire. You were just squatting in a house built by a better man."
