Chapter 2 - The Viper's Nest

Vanessa Callahan sat in the plush leather booth of an upscale steakhouse in downtown Chicago, swirling a glass of expensive cabernet sauvignon while she waited for her co-conspirator. Her designer sunglasses rested on top of her bleached blonde hair, and a diamond tennis bracelet—purchased with the first installment of the insurance payout—glistened under the dim restaurant lights.
Across from her sat Marcus Vance, a slick-haired man in his late forties whose expensive suit couldn't hide the predatory glint in his eyes.
"Did you drop them off?" Marcus asked, cutting into a rare prime rib with surgical precision. "No slip-ups? No cameras?"
"Please, Marcus, I'm not an amateur," Vanessa scoffed, taking a sip of wine. "I left them at Terminal 3 right by the international ticketing counters. By the time security realizes those brats are alone, I’ll be boarding a flight to Miami. The insurance check clears tomorrow, and the deed to Julian’s old workshop transfers into your shell corporation by midnight. It's done."
"Good," Marcus murmured, though a subtle twitch in his jaw betrayed his underlying anxiety. "You don't understand who Julian was before he settled down in that dump. He crossed paths with some very dangerous people a long time ago. If anyone digs into his past—"
"Julian was a mechanic who died broke in a rented garage!" Vanessa interrupted sharply. "Nobody cares about him. And nobody cares about a couple of sniffling kids."
"Is that right?"
A voice—cold, flat, and carrying the absolute weight of a death sentence—dropped over the table like a guillotine.
Vanessa froze with her wine glass halfway to her mouth. Marcus’s knife stopped scraping against his plate.
Slowly, agonizingly, Vanessa turned her head toward the source of the sound. Standing at the edge of their booth was a towering man in a charcoal overcoat, his dark eyes fixed on her with a malice so pure it made the surrounding air feel freezing. Flanking him were four massive men in dark suits who blocked every exit from the private dining nook.
Marcus recognized him instantly. The color drained from his face, leaving him looking like a corpse under fluorescent lights.
"R-Ryker..." Marcus stammered, scrambling to stand up, his chair tipping backward onto the hardwood floor with a sharp crash. "Steel. I didn't know you were in town. This... this is a private conversation—"
"It was," Ryker said smoothly, stepping into the booth and sliding onto the bench seat directly across from Vanessa. He didn't look at Marcus. His gaze remained locked on the terrified stepmother, whose fingers were trembling so badly wine spilled over the rim of her glass.
"You're... you're Ryker Steel," Vanessa whispered, her voice cracking as she recognized the face from late-night news segments and underworld whispers. "What do you want with me? I haven't done anything illegal!"
"You abandoned five-year-old twins at an airport terminal," Ryker said, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly soft whisper. "You stole insurance money meant for their care. And worst of all... you thought you could mess with a blood debt owed to a man who saved my life."
Vanessa swallowed hard, panic overriding her senses. "They weren't my kids! I didn't ask for them! Julian died and left me with nothing but debt—"
"Julian left you breathing," Ryker interrupted, slamming his palm down on the table. The heavy mahogany surface cracked right down the middle, the sound echoing through the suddenly silent restaurant. Every patron within fifty feet ducked their heads or fled toward the doors.
"Silas," Ryker commanded without breaking eye contact with the shaking woman.
"Boss?"
"Take Vanessa’s passport, her bank cards, her designer bags, and every single cent of that insurance payout she stole. Transfer it into a trust fund bearing Owen and Lily Callahan’s names, managed exclusively by my legal team."
"Consider it done," Silas said, stepping forward and yanking Vanessa’s purse off her shoulder with chilling efficiency.
"You can't do this!" Vanessa shrieked as Silas hauled her to her feet. "I'll call the police! I'll tell them you're kidnapping me!"
"Go ahead," Ryker smiled grimly. "Tell the cops Ryker Steel is taking back what's his. See how many judges answer your call."

As Vanessa was dragged sobbing toward the exit, Ryker slowly turned his attention to Marcus Vance, who was plastered against the wall behind the booth, sweating profusely.
"Now, Marcus," Ryker said, leaning back and resting his scarred hands on the table. "Let's talk about Julian's workshop. And why you were so desperate to steal it from his orphans."
