Chapter 3 - The Fortress on the Lake

The transition from the public vulnerability of Bellini’s to the absolute, iron-clad security of the Moretti estate in Lake Forest was swift and silent. Dominic refused to let Elena out of his sight, ordering his armored convoy to transport her and the triplets directly to his private residence—a sweeping, hyper-secure mansion surrounded by a fifteen-foot stone wall and patrolled by twenty elite private security guards.
The children were exhausted, their small heads nodding off against the plush leather seats of the SUV. When they arrived at the estate, Dominic effortlessly lifted both Caleb and Noah into his massive arms, while Elena carried Sophie, who was clutching a pink plush bear she had refused to leave behind at the restaurant.
Dominic carried his sons up the grand marble staircase, placing them gently onto the massive king-sized bed in the east wing’s primary guest suite. Elena laid Sophie down beside them, pulling the heavy silk duvet over their small bodies.
For a long, quiet moment, Dominic stood at the foot of the bed, watching the rhythmic rise and fall of his children’s chests. The cold, ruthless mafia don looked completely undone, his eyes reflecting a vulnerability his enforcers had never seen in his entire life.
"They look like my mother," Dominic whispered, his voice cracking slightly as he touched Caleb’s dark curls. "She had the same serious mouth when she was angry."
Elena walked over to him, standing just inches away. The familiar scent of her—vanilla and sweet almond—enveloped him, breaking through the five years of numbness he had forced upon himself. "Dominic... what happens now? Matteo still has half the captains in this city loyal to him. If he finds out the children are here—"
"Matteo is finished," Dominic interrupted, his face returning to a mask of absolute, unyielding stone as he turned to look at her. He reached out, his long, calloused fingers gently cupping her cheek, his touch incredibly warm despite the violence underlying his world. "For five years, I fought to protect an empire because I thought it was all I had left. Now I know I was protecting a graveyard. You and these children are my empire now, Elena. No one steps foot inside this house without my permission, and no one leaves it alive if they mean you harm."
A soft knock on the door interrupted the moment. Gabriel stood in the hallway, his expression grave, a bloody tactical radio in his hand.

"Dominic," Gabriel said quietly. "We have a problem at the docks. Matteo wasn't at his penthouse. His enforcers knew we were coming. It was a leak from inside the inner circle. The warehouse at the South Docks is currently under siege by the Colombo family's hit squads. Matteo has defected to the rivals."
Dominic’s eyes narrowed into slits, a cruel, dangerous smile touching the corners of his lips. "He thinks a rival family can protect him from a father who just found his children? Gabriel, wake up the old guard. Tell them the Moretti syndicate is going to war tonight, and I am personally leading the vanguard."
