Chapter 8 - Truth in the Ashes

Three weeks after the gala, the legal storms had settled into an undeniable reality.

Richard Vance sat behind a thick glass partition in the state penitentiary, wearing an orange jumpsuit. His silver hair was unkempt, his face lined with deep exhaustion and defeat.

The receiver on his side of the glass buzzed. He picked it up slowly, looking across the counter at Evelyn, who sat quietly on the opposite side.

"You came to gloat?" Richard asked, his voice flat and hoarse through the speaker.

"I came to give you closure," Evelyn replied smoothly, placing her hands neatly on her lap. "The court finalized the forfeiture of all your assets yesterday. The estate, the accounts, the corporate shares—everything has been seized or liquidated."

Richard let out a bitter, dry laugh. "You think you won, Evelyn? You destroyed the family name. The Vance legacy is in ruins."

"The legacy was already in ruins the day you placed a child in a cage," Evelyn said, her tone utterly devoid of pity. "You spent five years believing power was built on control and fear. But you overlooked the simplest thing."

"And what is that?" Richard spat.

"A mother's memory," Evelyn said softly. "You thought time would make me give up. You thought the city would forget. But love doesn't have an expiration date, Richard. And now, you will spend the rest of your life in a small room, with nothing but four walls and your own thoughts for company. Exactly as you left my son."

Richard stared at her, his lips trembling, but no words came out.

Evelyn hung up the phone receiver, stood up smoothly, and walked away from the glass partition, leaving Richard alone in the cold, silent visitor room.

Outside the prison gates, the morning sky was clear and bright. Julian was waiting by the vehicle, opening the door for her with a warm, respectful nod. Over the past three weeks, Julian had checked himself into a rehabilitation facility, stepped down from corporate politics, and committed his full time to rebuilding his relationship with his children as a humble, present father.

"How was he?" Julian asked quietly as they drove back toward the city.

"He is already forgotten," Evelyn replied, looking out at the passing trees. "How are the children?"

"Dr. Sterling gave Leo a complete clean bill of health this morning," Julian smiled genuinely. "His weight is back to normal. And Clara took him to the park today—without security guards standing three feet away."

Evelyn let out a deep, long breath, feeling the heavy burden that had weighed on her chest for five agonizing years finally dissolve into the warm air.
