Chapter 7 - A Mother's Fury

The Grand Plaza Hotel ballroom was flooded with crystal chandeliers, golden decorations, and hundreds of the city's most powerful figures. Cameras flashed repeatedly as corporate leaders, politicians, and socialites mingled over glasses of champagne, unaware of the storm brewing outside.

The annual Vance Global Shareholders Gala was meant to be Richard’s crowning achievement. Even with Richard in federal custody, his loyal board members were desperately attempting to carry out the scheduled transition of power to prevent the stock from collapsing before morning trading opened.

The interim chairman stepped up to the podium, clearing his throat. "Ladies and gentlemen, due to unforeseen legal complications, Mr. Richard Vance will not be joining us tonight. However, the motion to absorb the remaining family shares under Apex Holdings will proceed as scheduled—"

The massive oak double doors at the rear of the ballroom slammed open.

Evelyn Vance walked down the red carpet aisle. She wore a striking, floor-length emerald silk gown, her hair swept back flawlessly, her posture radiating absolute power. Walking beside her was Julian Vance, holding the hand of little Clara, who wore a matching white dress.

And walking right beside Evelyn, holding his mother’s hand with quiet confidence, was Leo. He was dressed in a tailored navy suit, his hair neatly combed, his striking blue eyes clear and unwavering under the brilliant chandeliers.

The ballroom went dead silent. Whispers erupted instantly, spreading through the crowd like wildfire. Cameras flashed in a blinding wave of light.

"Is that... is that the missing boy?" "My God, he's alive!"

Evelyn walked directly onto the raised stage, pushing the interim chairman away from the microphone with a single, sweeping motion of her arm.

"Good evening," Evelyn’s voice echoed powerfully through the massive ballroom speakers, commanding absolute attention. "Tonight was meant to celebrate the consolidation of Vance Global under Apex Holdings. But I am here to announce a change in leadership."

She gestured toward the wide projector screen behind the podium. Inspector Thomas, standing near the AV booth, inserted a digital drive.

The screen lit up, displaying federal indictment documents, wire transfer records linking Apex Holdings directly to offshore human-trafficking networks, and a recorded video confession from Deputy Chief Miller detailing Richard Vance's direct orders to kidnap four-year-old Leo.

Gasps of horror rippled through the audience. Several prominent board members turned pale, sliding toward the exits, only to find federal agents standing quietly at every door.

"For five years, my family was torn apart by greed," Evelyn declared, her gaze sweeping over the silent room. "My son was hidden in darkness so that corrupt men could build a financial empire on his suffering. But the darkness is over."

She looked down at Leo, offering him a warm, triumphant smile, before addressing the room one last time.

"Effective immediately, as the primary legal guardian of the majority shareholder estate, I am dissolving Apex Holdings. Vance Global will undergo complete liquidation of its corrupt assets, and fifty percent of all profits will be permanently redirected to establish the Leo Vance Foundation for Missing and Exploited Children."

The room remained motionless for two long seconds before an elderly shareholder in the front row stood up and began to clap. Within moments, the entire ballroom erupted into a thunderous standing ovation.

Julian stood beside Evelyn, weeping silently as he wrapped an arm around her and Clara, while Leo looked out at the clapping crowd, no longer terrified, no longer trembling.
