Chapter 5 - Fractured Ties

The small copper key rested in the center of Evelyn’s palm, cold and heavy. Leo sat beside Clara on the velvet ottoman in the study, his hands resting quietly on his knees.

"The box in the wall," Leo whispered, his voice steadying with every passing day under his family's care. "He put papers inside it. The man who guarded me... he told me that if the silver-haired man ever tried to hurt him, those papers would send him to prison forever."

Inspector Thomas leaned over the desk, examining the key under the bright desk light. "It’s a standard double-bitted key, likely for an old safe-deposit box or a mechanical floor safe. If the guard kept a insurance policy against Richard Vance, that box contains the physical proof of kidnapping, wire transfers, and conspiracy."

Before Thomas could finish his thought, the study doors burst open. Julian Vance strode into the room, his eyes bloodshot and his tailored suit wrinkled. Behind him, two security guards stood hesitant, having been bypassed by Julian’s knowledge of the estate’s secondary entry codes.

"Evelyn, we need to talk now," Julian demanded, his voice laced with panic. "Richard called an emergency board meeting for tomorrow morning. He’s moving to freeze your voting rights on the ground of 'emotional instability' following Leo's reappearance. He's claiming you're manufacturing stories to destabilize the company!"

Evelyn didn't flinch. She slowly folded her fingers over the copper key and stood up. "And where do you stand, Julian? Are you going to sell out your son a second time to keep your vice-chairman seat?"

Julian looked at Leo, his expression crumbling into deep shame. "I didn't know, Evelyn! Five years ago, Richard told me Leo was dead—he showed me ransom notes from a syndicate that claimed they had executed him. He told me the only way to save the family from total ruin was to merge our stock options under Apex Holdings. I was broken, I was drinking, and I trusted my brother!"

Julian dropped to his knees in front of Leo, tears streaming down his face. "Leo... please. Look at me. I was a coward. I let them tell me you were gone because I couldn't bear the pain of looking for your body. But I swear to you, on my life, I never knew Richard was the one holding you."

Leo looked at the weeping man. The icy fear that usually gripped his chest in the presence of strange adults didn't trigger. Instead, he saw a broken man hollowed out by the same monster who had kept him in the dark.

Leo took a small step forward and gently touched Julian’s shoulder. "He told me you forgot about me. But Mom said you were just lost."

Julian let out a ragged sob, burying his face in his hands as he pressed his forehead against his son’s knee.

Evelyn watched the scene, the icy rage in her eyes softening slightly, replaced by a ruthless resolve. She looked at Thomas. "We don't wait for the Gala. We find that box tonight. Julian, you are going to walk into that board meeting tomorrow, and you are going to play the obedient little brother for twelve more hours."

Julian wiped his eyes, standing up with a newfound steel in his jaw. "Tell me what to do. I’ll burn the whole company down if it means destroying Richard."
