Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Past

The iron gates of the Vance estate swept open silently, allowing the black SUV to glide onto the manicured gravel driveway. The mansion towered against the twilight sky, an imposing structure of limestone and dark slate that had belonged to the Vance family for three generations. Normally, the home was an oasis of quiet, disciplined order, but tonight the atmosphere inside was electric with tension.

Inside the rear passenger compartment, Leo remained motionless, his fingers still locked into the lapel of Evelyn’s trench coat. His blue eyes, wide and guarded, darted back and forth across the leather upholstery, monitoring the movement of every shadow outside the tinted windows. Next to him, Clara sat quietly, her small hands resting neatly on her lap, keeping her eyes fixed on her brother as if he might dissolve back into air if she looked away.

"We are home, sweetie," Evelyn murmured softly, brushing a tangle of hair from Leo’s dirt-streaked forehead. Her voice was thick with emotion, but beneath her warmth lay an undercurrent of fierce, protective steel.

When the car door opened, Marcus held an umbrella overhead, shielding them from the light drizzle that had begun to fall. Evelyn carried Leo up the wide stone steps, refusing to let him touch the ground. The boy clung to her neck, his breathing short and shallow. The grand double doors swung open, revealing the cavernous marble foyer. Standing near the grand staircase was Dr. Sterling, the family’s trusted physician, alongside two nurses and Mrs. Gable, the head housekeeper.

Mrs. Gable took one look at the frail child wrapped in Evelyn’s high-end coat and pressed a hand over her mouth, her eyes welling with instant tears. "Dear God above... Master Leo?"

"Clear the drawing-room lounge," Evelyn instructed sharply, stepping past the staff. "Dr. Sterling, I want a complete evaluation immediately. But do not startle him. No sharp instruments, no raised voices."

"Of course, Evelyn," Dr. Sterling replied, his voice calm and measured as he gestured toward the soft leather sofa in the adjoining room. "Let us set him down gently."

When Evelyn attempted to lower Leo onto the plush cushions, his arms tightened around her neck in a sudden, panic-stricken grip. "No! Don't leave!" he pleaded, his voice cracking.

"I’m not going anywhere, Leo. I am right here," Evelyn promised, sitting beside him on the sofa and keeping her arm firmly around his shoulders. "I will stay right by your side."

Dr. Sterling knelt in front of the boy, maintaining a soft, non-threatening posture. He slowly opened his medical kit, explaining every movement before he made it. "Hello, Leo. My name is Arthur. I’m just going to listen to your heart and check your temperature. Is that alright?"

Leo looked at Evelyn, who nodded encouragingly. Slowly, the boy loosened his posture just enough to allow the doctor to place a stethoscope against his chest. As Dr. Sterling carefully rolled up the oversized sleeves of the ragged sweater Leo wore under the coat, a heavy silence fell across the room.

Beneath the dirt and grime, Leo’s arms were crisscrossed with thin, jagged pale lines—old scars from years past—alongside deep purple bruises that were much more recent. His wrist bore the raw red ring of prolonged restraint.

Evelyn closed her eyes briefly, her jaw tightening as a surge of cold fury coursed through her veins. Clara, standing near the doorway, let out a small gasp, covering her mouth with both hands.

"Malnourishment is severe," Dr. Sterling reported quietly after completing his physical examination. "He is dehydrated, suffering from minor bronchial inflammation, and has sustained multiple soft-tissue contusions. The scars indicate past physical trauma, but thankfully, there are no immediate life-threatening fractures. He needs rest, nutrient fluids, and meticulous care."

While the doctor prepared an IV drip with vitamin supplements, the heavy oak doors of the foyer slammed open, followed by the sound of hurried, heavy footfalls echoing off the marble floor.

Julian Vance—Evelyn’s ex-husband and Leo’s father—stroked into the drawing room. His expensive suit was slightly disheveled, his tie loosened, and his face pale with disbelief. Behind him walked Richard Vance, his older brother and the chief managing director of the family enterprise, Vance Global Enterprises.

"Where is he?" Julian demanded, his voice trembling as he stepped into the light. He stopped dead in his tracks the moment his eyes landed on the boy sitting on the sofa. "My God... Leo?"

Leo shrank back into Evelyn’s side, his eyes locking onto the tall, unfamiliar man with panic. He didn't recognize Julian. Five years of absence had erased the memory of his father's face entirely.

"Julian, stand back," Evelyn warned coldly, placing herself partially in front of her son. "You are scaring him."

"Scaring him? Evelyn, he is my son!" Julian took another frantic step forward, reaching out a hand. "Leo! It’s Dad! Don't you remember me?"

"He doesn't remember you because you stopped looking for him three years ago!" Evelyn snapped back, her eyes flashing with venom. "You signed the presumption-of-death paperwork so you could liquidate his trust fund for your restructuring projects. Do not pretend your heart is breaking now."

Julian winced as if struck, his face flushing crimson under the sting of her words.

Richard Vance stepped forward, placing a steadying hand on his younger brother’s shoulder. Richard was a tall, silver-haired man with sharp, calculating eyes that rarely revealed emotion. He looked down at the boy with an unreadable expression, his fingers tightening slightly on Julian’s coat sleeve.

"Evelyn," Richard said smoothly, his voice low and diplomatic. "This is an unbelievable miracle. The entire family is overwhelmed with relief. But we must handle this with extreme discretion. Think of the media frenzy if news leaks that the heir to Vance Global was found roaming the gutters like a beggar. The stock valuation could plummet overnight if rumors of kidnapping or extortion spread before we control the narrative."

Evelyn lifted her chin, staring down her former brother-in-law with pure disdain. "My son has just returned from hell, Richard, and your first thought is the valuation of Vance Global stock?"

"I am merely considering the stability of this family’s future," Richard replied coolly, his gaze shifting back to Leo. "Where was he found? Who was keeping him? Has anyone demanded money?"

"He was alone in an alley three miles from the central district," Evelyn said, keeping her hand resting protectively over Leo’s chest. "And I don't give a damn about the stock market. Tomorrow morning, I am bringing in my private security team to initiate an independent investigation. Whoever took my son will not hide behind corporate influence or police incompetence."

As Evelyn spoke, Leo shifted slightly, his gaze drifting over to Richard. For a brief fraction of a second, the boy’s eyes locked onto the gold signet ring on Richard’s right hand—a heavy, custom-engraved crest featuring a crowned falcon. Leo’s chest began to heave rapidly, his breathing turning into a series of panicked gasps as he shrank further into the couch.

"Leo? What's wrong?" Evelyn asked instantly, turning her full attention back to the child.

"The bird..." Leo whimpered, his tiny, scarred hand pointing a trembling finger toward Richard’s hand. "The bird ring... he... he was there in the dark room."

The atmosphere in the room instantly turned to ice.
