Chapter 8 - The Morning After

By 8:00 AM, the estate grounds were cleared.

Federal agents and state police vehicles filled the driveway, but no arrests were made. Adrian’s legal team, armed with video evidence showing a armed invasion by a recognized criminal syndicate, framed the entire event as a clear, undeniable act of private defense.

The sun rose bright and warm over the calm waters of Long Island Sound, melting the frost on the manicured lawns.

In the grand kitchen, the smell of fresh coffee and toasted pastries filled the air.

The heavy steel door of the panic room unlocked, and Hannah stepped out into the hallway, holding Ellie’s hand.

Ellie blinked against the bright morning light, looking around at the maids who were already cleaning the marble floors and replacing shattered glass windows.

Adrian stood near the floor-to-ceiling windows in the dining room, dressed in a clean dark suit, looking out at the sea. He turned as he heard the little footsteps approaching.

"Mr. Adrian!" Ellie called out, breaking away from her mother and running across the polished floor.

Adrian knelt down, catching her in his arms and lifting her comfortably against his hip.

"Are the bad men gone?" Ellie asked, looking into his eyes.

"They're gone, Ellie," Adrian murmured, smoothing her dark curls. "They're never coming back."

Hannah walked over, looking at Adrian with deep relief. "Is it really over?"

"The war is over, Hannah," Adrian replied, stepping closer to her. "Sal Falcone’s organization is dismantled. My family’s territory is completely secure. You and Ellie never have to look over your shoulder again."

Hannah let out a long, shuddering breath, a beautiful smile breaking across her face. "Thank you, Adrian."

Ellie looked between her mother and Adrian, then pulled a small, slightly squished juice box from her pocket.

"I saved this for you," Ellie announced proudly, handing it to Adrian. "So your throat doesn't get dry again."

Adrian stared at the tiny juice box, then looked at the little girl holding it out so earnestly. A genuine, radiant smile—one that reached his dark eyes for the first time in years—lit up his face.

Dominic, standing near the doorway, took a quick photo on his phone, smiling quietly to himself. The dark lord of New York was officially gone; a father had returned.
