Chapter 10 - The Whistle in the Wind

One year later.
The autumn leaves danced across the green lawns of the Sands Point estate, painting the grounds in brilliant shades of gold, orange, and deep red.
In the backyard, overlooking the blue water of the Sound, a large wooden playground with swings, slides, and a tiny playhouse stood surrounded by soft woodchips.
Six-year-old Ellie was swinging high into the air, her dark curls blowing in the crisp afternoon breeze, laughing loudly as Dominic stood behind her, pushing her gently.
"Higher, Uncle Dominic! Higher!" she cheered.
"Not too high, or your mother will have my badge!" Dominic laughed, giving the swing another light push.
On the veranda, Adrian sat at a wooden table with a cup of fresh tea. Hannah sat beside him, resting her head comfortably against his shoulder as they watched Ellie play.
Hannah’s stomach showed a soft, gentle curve beneath her sweater—she was four months pregnant with a little girl.
Adrian reached down, taking Hannah’s hand, resting his palm over her stomach, feeling the tiny, miraculous life growing within her.
"Are you happy, Adrian?" Hannah asked softly, looking up at his handsome face.
Adrian looked out at the bright blue sky, then at the crayon drawing that still hung framed inside his study, and finally down at his wife and the little girl laughing on the swings.
"I spent twenty years in the dark, Hannah," Adrian murmured, his voice filled with an overwhelming, profound peace. "I thought I would die there. But a four-year-old girl pulled me into the light."
Ellie ran up the porch steps, panting slightly, her cheeks rosy from the cool wind. She held up a small yellow leaf she had caught in the air.
"Look, Daddy!" Ellie shouted happily.
Adrian froze for a fraction of a second. It was the first time she had called him Daddy.
A soft, tearful smile broke across his face. He leaned down, opening his arms wide, and lifted his daughter into a warm, protective embrace, holding her tightly against his heart.

"It's beautiful, Ellie," Adrian whispered into her dark curls. "Just like you."
The wind blew softly through the tall oak trees surrounding the mansion, carrying away the ghosts of the past, leaving behind only the bright, unbreakable promise of a family that would never stand alone again.
