Chapter 4 - The Breakfast of Champions

By 6:00 AM, the rain had stopped, giving way to a pale pink sunrise over Long Island Sound.

In the small staff lounge near the kitchen, Vincent Bellini sat in a wooden chair, his head bowed, waiting for his fate. The cellar door unlocked, and the sound of small, hurried footsteps echoed down the hall.

"Grandpa!"

Vincent jerked his head up. Nicky burst through the door, running across the room and throwing his arms around his grandfather's waist.

Vincent burst into uncontrollable sobs, lifting his grandson and burying his face in the boy's neck. "Nicky! Oh God, Nicky! You're okay! You're safe!"

Adrian stood in the doorway, watching the reunion in silence. Dominic stood beside him, holding a folder containing Vincent’s signed resignation papers and two one-way tickets to Italy.

"You leave on a private flight from JFK at noon," Adrian said softly, stepping into the room. "You and Nicky will live at my villa in Palermo. You will have a pension, security, and a peaceful life. But you will never set foot in New York again, Vincent."

Vincent wiped his tears, holding his grandson tightly against his chest. He looked at Adrian with overwhelming shame and gratitude. "Adrian... I don't deserve your mercy."

"You don't," Adrian replied coldly. "You deserve a bullet. But your grandson deserves a grandfather. Now get out of my sight before I change my mind."

An hour later, upstairs in the grand dining room, sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Hannah sat nervously at the long mahogany table, wearing a clean cotton dress that one of the staff had provided for her. Sitting beside her in a high booster chair was Ellie, happily swinging her legs while eating a giant plate of blueberry pancakes drizzled with maple syrup.

Adrian walked into the room, dressed in a fresh charcoal suit. The lingering pale color on his face from the previous night's poisoning was gone, replaced by an aura of absolute determination.

Ellie looked up from her pancakes, her mouth smeared with syrup. "Hi, Mr. Adrian! Look! I got pancakes!"

A faint smile touched Adrian’s lips. "I see that, Ellie. Are they good?"

"They're better than Mommy’s," Ellie said honestly.

"Ellie!" Hannah gasped, blushing furiously. "That is so rude!"

Adrian sat at the head of the table, waving his hand dismissively. "She’s allowed to speak the truth, Hannah." He signaled to a maid, who poured him a cup of black coffee.

"Mr. Moretti," Hannah said nervously, setting her fork down. "Dominic told me what happened last night... about the butler and the rival family. I'm so sorry you had to go through that."

"It's the life I chose, Mrs. Carter," Adrian replied, taking a sip of his coffee. "But your life is going to change now. I spoke with my legal team this morning. We are setting up a private education trust for Ellie. Ten million dollars has been placed into a restricted account that will cover her schooling, her medical expenses, and her future through college."

Hannah stared at him, her mouth opening and closing in complete disbelief. "Ten... ten million dollars? Mr. Moretti, no! That’s too much! We can’t accept that!"

"It isn't a gift, Hannah," Adrian said, his voice deep and absolute. "It’s a debt of honor. Your daughter gave up her only medicine to save a man she didn't know. In my world, a life saved is a debt that can never be fully repaid. Furthermore, I want you to work for me directly."

Hannah blinked. "As a housekeeper?"

"No," Adrian said. "As the personal administrator of the estate’s residential wing. You will oversee the staff, manage the grounds, and live here with Ellie. You will have a permanent salary, health insurance, and full security."

Hannah covered her face with her hands, weeping tears of pure relief. For two years, since her husband’s death, she had been drowning in debt, terrorized by the constant fear of not being able to afford her daughter's medicine. In a single night, the terrifying monster of New York had lifted every burden from her shoulders.

Ellie reached out with her small syrup-covered hand, patting her mother's arm. "Don't cry, Mommy. Mr. Adrian is nice. He gives us pancakes."

Adrian looked at the little girl, feeling a profound sense of purpose returning to his cold, empty life. But beneath his calm exterior, a dark storm was brewing.

He knew Sal Falcone would not stop until the Moretti family was completely destroyed. And now, Adrian had two more lives he was willing to burn the world to protect.
