Chapter 6 - The Broken Bond

The heavy silence that followed the gunshots was broken only by the sound of rain blowing through the shattered glass window.

I turned slowly around.

Noah stood near the fireplace, shaking violently, staring at the unconscious body of the man who had raised him for the last six years under a mountain of lies.

I slowly lowered my weapon, holstered it, and took off my tactical helmet. I stepped carefully toward him, holding my hands out in open surrender.

"Noah..." I said softly.

He backed away three steps, his eyes filled with overwhelming fear and confusion. "I... I don't know you... my name is Matthew... Mr. Sterling said—"

"I know what he told you, son," I said gently, stopping six feet away so I wouldn't scare him. "He gave you a new name. He tried to make you forget who you were. But a name isn't what makes you my son."

I reached into my tactical vest, pulled out the small, worn blue blanket I had carried across three hundred miles of ocean, and held it out in my hands.

Noah stared at the blue fabric. His hands began to tremble.

"You wouldn't sleep without this when you were little," I whispered, tears falling freely now. "Every night, after I read you a story about airplanes, you would wrap this around your shoulders and pretend you were a pilot."

Noah took one slow step forward. He reached out with a trembling finger and touched the soft, familiar edge of the blanket.

A flood of emotion broke through the fourteen-year-old boy's posture. His eyes welled with hot tears as a decade of suppressed grief, confusion, and fear burst out of him at once.

"Dad..." he sobbed, his voice cracking.

I closed the distance between us, pulling my fourteen-year-old son into my arms, wrapping him in a fierce, unbreakable embrace that wiped away ten long years of darkness.

"I've got you, Noah," I wept, holding his head against my chest, feeling his warm tears soak through my tactical vest. "I've got you, son. The mission is over. You're safe."

Bull and Agent Vance walked into the room through the broken door, their weapons held at low ready.

Bull took one look at us, wiped a stray tear from his rough grey beard, and turned to Vance. "Secure the prisoner, Agent. We're going home."
