Chapter 3 - Into the Abyss

The black water of the Caribbean Sea swirled furiously against the acrylic viewports of the Neptune II, a four-person commercial deep-sea submersible painted in matte black anti-reflective coating.
Outside, the depth gauge read one hundred and forty feet.
"Sonar is clean," Jax reported from the front console, his face illuminated by the green glow of tactical monitors. "Sterling’s surface radar is sweeping the water above us every forty seconds. They have no idea we are down here."
Sitting beside me in the cramped compartment, Bull was checking his suppressed submachine gun, his massive hands moving with practiced efficiency. Agent Vance sat behind us, checking her night-vision goggles.
"Depth rising," Jax called out. "One hundred feet... eighty feet... we are entering the mouth of the northern sinkhole."
The submersible glided smoothly into a massive underwater cavern system. The headlights illuminated sharp stalactites hanging from the flooded stone ceiling.
"Parking sub at sixty feet," Jax declared, hitting the ballast controls. The craft settled gently onto a flat stone ledge beneath the water. "Rebreathers on. We have forty-five minutes of oxygen before the internal pressure equalizes."
We slipped on our tactical rebreather masks, attached our wet-gear equipment, and flooded the airlock chamber. Within ninety seconds, five shadows glided through the freezing black water, swimming upward through the vertical shaft that led directly beneath the Sterling Citadel.
We surfaced inside a damp, subterranean drainage cistern beneath the compound’s power generator building. The air reeked of diesel fuel and sea salt.
I climbed out first, my suppressed handgun drawn, scanning the shadows. "Clear," I whispered over the encrypted short-range throat mics.
Bull climbed up behind me, hauling the heavy equipment bag containing thermal charges and electronic bypass devices.
Jax hooked his field tablet into an exposed junction box on the concrete wall. His fingers flew across the touch screen. "I’m in their internal network. Bypassing perimeter sensors... looping security camera feeds in Hallways 3, 4, and 5... now."
"We have twenty minutes before their system administrator detects the data lag," Vance warned, checking her suppressed pistol.
"Where is my son?" I asked Jax, my heart pounding with a cold, terrifying intensity.
Jax zoomed in on a floor plan of the main residence. "The citadel has a reinforced residential wing on the third floor. High-security biometric locks on every door. There’s a central security room on the second floor controlling access."
"We split up," I commanded. "Bull and Vance, secure the central security room and lock down the elevator shafts. Jax, cut the auxiliary communications array so they can't signal their offshore patrol boats. I'm going to the third floor."

"Colonel," Bull said, placing a heavy hand on my shoulder. "Sterling isn't going to give him up without a fight. He knows who you are."
"I know," I said, chambering a round into my weapon with a sharp clack. "That’s what I'm counting on."
