Chapter 5 - The Confrontation

"Look at you, Daniel," Sterling sneered, his lips curling into a cruel, sadistic smile. "The great Colonel Caldwell... breaking into my home like a common thief."

"Let him go, Sterling," I said, my voice dropping into a register so dark and threatening it made the air in the room freeze. "Your guards are down. Your comms are dark. Federal agents are waiting offshore. It's over."

"Over?" Sterling laughed, a dry, bitter sound. "Do you have any idea what it took to buy this boy from Eleanor Vance? Do you know how much it cost to scrub his identity, build a new background for him, and turn him into my personal heir?"

"He isn't your heir, Sterling!" I roared, taking half a step closer, my weapon trained dead-center on Sterling’s chest. "He is my son!"

Noah looked between the two of us, his young chest heaving with rapid breaths. "Father... what is he talking about? You told me my parents died in a car crash when I was four!"

"He lied to you, Noah!" I shouted, keeping my eyes locked on Sterling's finger hovering over the trigger. "Ten years ago, you were stolen from a park near Charleston Harbor! Your name is Noah Caldwell! Your dog was named Buddy! You used to fly model airplanes in your bedroom!"

Noah froze. The color drained from his face as those buried memories—dormant for a decade—flooded back into his mind like a tidal wave.

"Buddy..." Noah whispered, his eyes widening in shock. "The... the big brown Labrador?"

"Yes, son!" Tears streamed down my face, but my hands remained steady as steel. "I promised you before every deployment... no matter where you are, I will always come back for you!"

Noah gasped, clutching his head with both hands as the final barrier of his suppressed childhood memories shattered into a thousand pieces. "Dad...?"

"Shut up!" Sterling screamed, his sanity slipping as he realized he was losing control of his carefully crafted delusion. He pulled Noah by his collar, using him as a human shield. "He belongs to me! I built an empire for him!"

"You didn't build an empire for him, Sterling," I hissed. "You took him because you were a pathetic, jealous coward who couldn't beat me in the real world, so you tried to break my heart!"

"I will kill him right in front of you!" Sterling shrieked, tightening his finger on the trigger.

Before Sterling could squeeze, a single, high-velocity sniper round shattered the outer floor-to-ceiling glass window from five hundred yards out.

CRASH!

The heavy bullet tore through Sterling’s right shoulder, spinning him backward and knocking the gun from his grip.

Agent Vance’s voice crackled through my earpiece. "Sniper shot confirmed from the roof deck, Colonel! Take him down!"

I didn't hesitate. I charged across the marble floor, tackled Sterling to the ground, and delivered a devastating blow to his jaw, knocking him unconscious before he hit the rug.
