Chapter 4 - The Serpent's Lair

The hallways of the Sterling Citadel were lined with cold grey marble, floor-to-ceiling bulletproof glass, and automated security turrets hanging from the ceiling corners. It was a palace designed for a man who lived in constant fear of retribution.
I moved through the shadows of the second-floor balcony like a ghost, stepping over two unconscious guards whom Bull had neutralized with lightning speed.
Thump. Thump.
The muffled sound of Jax’s suppressed pistol echoed from the communications room downstairs as he severed the main satellite uplink.
"Security grid locked down, Boss," Bull’s voice crackled through my earpiece. "We have control of the central elevator and internal communications. You are clear to advance to the third floor."
I took the service stairs three at a time, my rubber-soled combat boots silent against the steel steps.
Reaching the third-floor corridor, I saw it—a massive, reinforced steel door guarded by two heavily armed mercenaries clad in dark tactical armor, holding automatic shotguns.
They didn't even get a chance to raise their weapons.
I stepped out from the stairwell, firing two double-taps into their chest plates, the high-velocity armor-piercing rounds dropping both men instantly before they could trigger their emergency alarm buttons.
I stepped over their bodies, pulled a keycard from the lead guard's vest, and swiped it through the biometric reader beside the heavy steel door.
BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.
ACCESS GRANTED.
The heavy door hissed open, revealing a luxurious, vast penthouse suite overlooking the stormy Caribbean ocean through floor-to-ceiling reinforced glass windows.
Standing near the fireplace, wearing a tailored silk smoking jacket and holding a glass of amber scotch, was Julian Sterling.
And standing beside him, wearing a plain grey uniform and holding an tablet computer, was a fourteen-year-old boy.
He was tall, thin, with dark hair cut neat and short. But his eyes... those bright, piercing blue eyes... were unmistakable.
It was Noah.
My breath hitched in my throat. Ten years of unbearable pain, endless sleepless nights, and agonizing grief vanished in a single, earth-shattering second.
"Noah..." I choked out, taking a step forward.
The boy blinked, looking at me with a mixture of confusion and sudden, strange familiarity. "Who... who are you?"
May you like
"Stay where you are, Colonel!" Sterling’s sharp, arrogant voice cut through the room.
Sterling pulled a sleek snub-nosed revolver from his jacket pocket and aimed it directly at the boy’s head.
