Chapter 6 - Whispers in the Dark

As the weeks turned into months, the atmosphere inside the Rossi estate began to shift in subtle, unpredictable ways.

Leo was no longer a fragile neonate fighting for survival. By four months old, he was a robust, laughing infant with bright blue eyes and a crown of soft dark curls that matched his father's. He was rolling over, grabbing at toys, and blabbering happy nonsense that filled the silent, cavernous halls of the mansion with life.

And with Leo’s transformation came a quiet, unspoken shift between Lorenzo and Hannah.

The strict boundaries of employer and hired nurse began to blur around the edges. Lorenzo found himself coming home earlier from his Manhattan tower. The brutal, late-night corporate raids and ruthless territorial acquisitions that had occupied his mind since Sophia’s death were slowly pushed aside by a strange, compelling urge to return to Long Island before sunset.

He began taking his evening meals in the small dining room adjacent to the nursery instead of the massive, cold formal dining room downstairs. He would sit at the head of the mahogany table, reviewing financial reports on his tablet, while Hannah sat across from him, feeding Leo or eating her own tailored dinner.

"You're working too hard," Hannah said one evening as the rain lashed against the bulletproof glass of the ocean-facing windows.

Lorenzo didn't look up from his screen. "I manage twenty-six international subsidiaries, Hannah. 'Hard work' is a structural requirement."

"No," Hannah pushed gently, setting down her fork. "You work to avoid thinking. Every time you close that tablet, you look like you're waiting for an explosion."

Lorenzo’s fingers paused over the glass screen. He slowly turned his head to face her. "You have grown bold over these past three months, Miss Hayes."

"I've watched you stare at Sophia’s portrait in the gallery for an hour every night when you think everyone is asleep," Hannah replied softly, her voice devoid of judgment, filled only with a deep, quiet empathy. "I know what it’s like to live with a ghost, Lorenzo. It eats you alive from the inside until there's nothing left but armor."

Lorenzo’s jaw tightened. "Do not speak of my wife."

"I’m not trying to disrespect her," Hannah said, leaning forward, her green eyes holding his gaze without a hint of fear. "She was the love of your life. She gave you Leo. But you are torturing yourself because you survived and she didn't. Leo needs a father, Lorenzo. Not a guardian in a black suit who acts like he’s managing a corporate asset."

For a long moment, the only sound in the room was the heavy patter of rain against the glass. Lorenzo stood up slowly, his massive shadow enveloping the table. He walked around to her side, leaning down until his hands rested on the arms of her chair, trapping her within his space.

"You know nothing about my grief," Lorenzo hissed, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous growl. "You know nothing about the guilt of holding the woman you love while her life drains into the street."

"I held my baby while her heart stopped!" Hannah shouted back, standing up so abruptly her chair scraped loudly against the marble floor. Her face was inches from his, her chest heaving with raw emotion. "I know exactly what it feels like! I know what it’s like to look at tiny clothes you’ll never use! I know what it’s like to want to sleep and never wake up! So don't you dare tell me I don't understand!"

Lorenzo stared at her, his eyes wide with a mixture of shock and sudden, searing realization. The fire in her eyes was blinding. She wasn't backing down. She was standing in the center of his dark world, screaming back at the monster.

Slowly, the anger in Lorenzo’s expression crumbled, replaced by an agonizingly raw vulnerability that he had hidden from the world for two long years. He looked at her lips, then up at her green eyes, which were brimming with unshed tears.

Without a word, Lorenzo reached out, his long, calloused fingers gently cupping the side of her neck. His thumb brushed over her cheekbone, wiping away a single stray tear.

May you like

"Hannah," he whispered, his voice cracking with an emotion he couldn't control.

Before she could speak, the alarm klaxons across the estate began to wail.
