Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

"NO!" Hannah screamed, her fists pounding against the impenetrable steel door. "LORENZO!"

The only answer was the dull, muffled thuds of heavy gunfire echoing from the other side of the steel plate.

Hannah stood on the cold dock, tears blinding her vision, her heart tearing itself to pieces. She wanted to stay. She wanted to find a crowbar, a grenade, anything to blow that door open and fight alongside the man who had given her a reason to live. But then, a quiet, frightened whimper echoed from inside the boat cabin.

Leo.

She turned back. She looked at the infant strapped into the safety seat, his blue eyes wide, looking at her for guidance.

“No matter what happens, no matter what you see or hear, you do not let go of my son.”

Lorenzo’s words echoed in her mind with the force of an absolute command.

Hannah wiped the tears from her face, her jaw setting into a hard, unbreakable line. She scrambled back into the boat cabin, slid the key card Lorenzo had given her into the ignition slot, and smashed her thumb onto the dual-engine start button.

twin 450-horsepower Mercury marine engines roared to life, their deep, guttural thrum vibrating through the hull.

Hannah grabbed the heavy throttle levers, shoved them forward, and sent the interceptor boat launching out of the sea cave into the roaring, pitch-black waters of the stormy Atlantic Ocean.

Huge waves slammed into the bow, spraying freezing salt water over the windshield as the boat cut through the tempest. Hannah held onto the wheel with white-knuckled intensity, her eyes locked on the red emergency transponder button on the dashboard. She hit it. A bright blue LED light began to pulse rapidly, broadcasting their GPS coordinates to Lorenzo’s private security fleet.

Behind her, high up on the Long Island cliffs, she looked back at the Rossi estate.

Flames were belching from the roof of the grand mansion. Explosions tore through the upper guest wings, illuminating the night sky with violent orange plumes of smoke. The fortress was burning.

Hannah squeezed her eyes shut, sobbing violently as she steered the boat out into the deep ocean, clutching the wheel until her fingers went numb.

For two agonizing hours, Hannah navigated the treacherous storm, protecting Leo from the pitching movements of the vessel. Finally, out of the thick gray fog, the massive silhouette of a ninety-foot naval patrol vessel emerged. Spotlights cut through the dark, blinding her as armed men in coast guard tactical gear lowered ladders and ropes onto the interceptor’s deck.

"Identify yourself!" a voice bellowed through a bullhorn.

"I have Leo Rossi!" Hannah screamed back, her voice hoarse from crying and the howling wind. "I have Lorenzo Rossi’s son! Help us!"

Tactical operators swung down onto the boat deck, securing the vessel. A high-ranking officer rushed into the cabin, instantly recognizing the baby’s medical identification band around his wrist.

"Miss Hayes?" the officer asked, wrapping a warm wool blanket around her shoulders. "I’m Captain Vance, private security director for Rossi Maritime. Where is Mr. Rossi?"

Hannah collapsed onto the bench, holding Leo close to her chest, her voice breaking into shattered pieces. "He... he locked himself in the sea tunnel to cover our escape. The mansion was under attack by Julian Moretti."

Captain Vance’s face turned grim. He immediately reached for his tactical radio. "All units, this is Alpha-1. Target child is secure and unharmed. Execute Protocol Omega on the primary estate grounds. Heavy ground sweep. Leave no survivors."

Hannah looked out the reinforced window toward the distant, burning coast. Her soul felt hollow, ripped apart by the horrifying realization that the man she had grown to love had sacrificed himself so she and his son could live.
