Chapter 2 - The Golden Cage

By four o'clock in the morning, the grand estate was buzzing with a quiet, terrifying efficiency.

The night nurse had been dragged out of the mansion by two of Lorenzo’s personal security operatives, her pleas for mercy cut short as she was tossed into the back of a black SUV, destined for blacklisting and legal ruin. Dr. Julian Halloran had been summoned back to the estate via a private helicopter that landed on the south lawn, kicking up a storm of dew and turf.

When the elderly physician rushed into the nursery, expecting to declare the time of death for the Rossi heir, he stopped dead in his tracks.

Leo was lying in his crib, sleeping peacefully. His blood oxygen levels were sitting at ninety-eight percent. His heart rate was stable.

"It's a miracle," Dr. Halloran breathed, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses as he looked over the vitals monitor. "Absolute medical anomaly. What did you administer, Lorenzo? Did the imported serum arrive from Germany?"

Lorenzo was standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out over the dark expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. He didn't turn around. "No."

"Then what caused this sudden turn? His digestive tract was refusing all synthetic and donor enzymes."

"Human intervention," Lorenzo said smoothly, turning around. He nodded toward the corner of the room, where Hannah sat wrapped in a heavy cashmere blanket that Lorenzo had tossed to her an hour earlier. She looked small, overwhelmed, and deeply uncomfortable sitting in the center of the lavish suite. "Miss Hayes provided the solution."

Dr. Halloran stared at Hannah, then back at Lorenzo, his medical mind quickly putting the pieces together. "Wet nursing? But... donor milk was tested and rejected by his system."

"Her milk wasn't processed, frozen, or stored," Lorenzo stated, his voice clipping each word with absolute finality. "It was direct. Whatever antibodies or hormonal balance her body is producing, Leo’s system accepts it. Which brings us to the new protocol, Doctor."

Lorenzo stepped toward Hannah. The aura of absolute authority that surrounded him was suffocating. He pulled a silver pen and a thick document from his leather portfolio resting on the desk.

"As of this moment," Lorenzo announced, looking down at Hannah, "your employment as a housekeeper is terminated."

Hannah’s heart dropped into her stomach. "Mr. Rossi, please—"

"You are now on a private, exclusive contract as Leo’s primary wet nurse and personal caregiver," he interrupted, tossing the document onto the small table beside her. "You will not leave the grounds of this estate. You will live in the guest suite adjacent to the nursery. You will be provided with a medical team to monitor your diet, your stress levels, and your physical health. You will receive fifty thousand dollars for every week my son remains healthy and gaining weight under your care."

Hannah gasped, her head spinning. "Fifty... fifty thousand? Mr. Rossi, I don't want your money. I just—"

"You will take the money," Lorenzo snapped, his eyes flashing with a cold, unyielding light. "Because the money makes this a business transaction. And a business transaction means you belong to this estate until my son is old enough to survive on solid food. You will have no contact with the outside world without my express permission. No phone calls to family. No visits from friends. Your entire existence now belongs to keeping that child alive."

Hannah looked at the contract, then over to the crib where little Leo breathed softly, his small chest rising and falling in a steady, peaceful rhythm. She thought of her cramped, damp basement apartment in Queens. She thought of her ex-boyfriend, Jimmy, who was still out there somewhere, probably looking for her to finish what he started the night he kicked her down the stairs. She thought of her own empty arms that had ached with a physical, sickening void since the day her stillborn daughter, Lily, was taken away in a cold stainless-steel basin.

"What if I say no?" Hannah whispered, testing the boundaries of the monster standing before her.

Lorenzo leaned down until his face was inches from hers. She could smell the faint scent of expensive bourbon, cedarwood, and the iron tang of pure, unadulterated power.

"You won't say no," Lorenzo whispered back. "Because out there, you are a broken girl hiding from a violent past with nothing to your name. In here, you are the most protected woman on the East Coast. But make no mistake, Hannah: if you drop him, if you fail him, or if you attempt to cross me... there is nowhere on this earth you can hide from me."

May you like

Hannah swallowed hard. She picked up the silver pen. Her hand was shaking, but as she looked back at the baby, a strange sense of purpose swept over her. She didn't sign for the money. She signed because that motherless boy needed her just as much as she needed a reason to keep breathing.

She pressed the pen to the paper and signed her name.
