Chapter 4 - Unmasking the Past

The heavy oak doors slammed shut behind Richard Vance, sealing the mansion in a profound, heavy silence.

Victor didn't immediately turn around. He stood motionless in the center of the grand foyer for a long, quiet minute, letting the adrenaline drain from his veins, leaving behind a dull, throbbing ache in his bruised shoulder and a hollow ache in his chest.

Slowly, he turned his head toward the hallway.

Amelia was still standing there. The twins had finally quieted down, lulled by the low hum of the estate’s climate control and the sudden shift in energy, but they remained glued to her sides. Amelia looked exhausted, her eyes red-rimmed from crying, her shoulders tense with apprehension.

She expected him to rage. She expected him to demand answers, to interrogate her about her father, about why she had infiltrated his home, about the secrets she had kept.

Instead, Victor walked toward her. His steps were slow, heavy, deliberate.

When he stopped just a foot away from her, Amelia flinched slightly, her gaze dropping to the floor. "Mr. Hale... I'm sorry. I should have told you about my father's connections sooner. I tried, but—"

"Amelia," Victor interrupted softly.

She stopped, looking up into his face. The harsh, intimidating edge that usually defined his features had completely dissolved, replaced by a raw, profound vulnerability.

"You saved my children," Victor said, his voice thick with emotion. "And... you stayed when you had every reason to run."

"I couldn't run," Amelia whispered, a fresh tear slipping down her cheek. "Not when I realized what kind of man you really were beneath all the armor. You're not a monster, Victor. You're just a man who forgot how to breathe because the grief was too heavy."

Victor reached out, his large, warm hand gently cupping her cheek. The touch was hesitant, almost reverent, as if he couldn't quite believe he had the right to touch her. Amelia leaned imperceptibly into his palm, her eyes closing for a brief second as she let out a long, trembling breath.

"Tell me everything," Victor murmured gently, stepping closer so that he could shelter both her and the twins within his reach. "Tell me about your father. Tell me how Richard tried to use you. And most importantly... tell me how you came to love a broken house like this one."

Amelia looked up at him, seeing the true man behind the billionaire title—a man ready to tear down his own empire to protect what mattered. And as she began to speak, the shadows that had haunted the Hawthorne-Hale estate for years finally began to lift, paving the way for a truth far more powerful than any lie Victor had ever tested.
