Chapter 2 - The Whispered Truth

"I can't let them take the children, Victor," Amelia whispered into the quiet space just inches from his ear, using his first name for the very first time. "Not after everything I did to protect you both from my father... and not after what the board is planning for tomorrow."
Victor’s internal monologue screeched to a sudden, violent halt.
Her father? The board? What on earth did Amelia’s family have to do with Hale International?
For months, Victor’s executive board—led by his ruthless, calculating COO, Richard Vance—had been pushing for an aggressive hostile takeover of a rival tech firm, a move Victor had stubbornly resisted because the numbers didn't add up. Richard Vance had been pressuring him relentlessly, hinting that Victor was "distracted by domestic liabilities."
And yet, here was Amelia—a quiet, unassuming girl from a working-class background who applied through a standard agency—whispering about a conspiracy involving the board of directors.
Amelia didn't know he was conscious. She thought she was speaking to a dying man, pouring out the secrets she had carried like a lead weight in her chest.
"I only took the job to watch over them," she sobbed softly, her fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from Victor’s forehead with a tenderness that made his chest ache. "When Richard Vance offered my father’s company a bailout in exchange for inside access to your household schedules... I refused to let them use the babies as leverage. I came here to protect your children, Victor. But somewhere along the way... I fell in love with this broken house. I fell in love with you."
The confession hung in the air like a lightning strike.
Victor’s heart hammered against his ribs so violently he was certain she would feel it through the floorboards. Every defensive wall he had spent thirty-five years constructing—brick by cold, cynical brick—crumbled into dust. She wasn't just a nanny. She was a shield. A spy who had switched sides out of pure, unadulterated love for his children and for him.
Suddenly, the front security doors buzzed loudly, followed by the heavy clacking of expensive leather shoes echoing across the marble exterior.
"Mr. Hale?" a sharp, familiar voice called out from the entryway.
Richard Vance’s voice.
Amelia gasped, instantly pulling back from Victor. She scrambled to her feet, scooping the crying twins into her arms, her face pale, slick with tears, but hardened with sudden, fierce determination. She backed away toward the hallway leading to the nursery, shielding the children behind her body.

Victor knew he couldn't keep playing dead. Not now. The game was over. The real war was about to begin.
With a sharp intake of breath, Victor pushed himself up from the cold floor, his eyes snapping open with a terrifying, predator-like intensity that made Richard Vance—who had just stepped through the double doors—stop dead in his tracks.
