Chapter 8 - The Truth Unveiled

Two weeks later, the summer heat gave way to a crisp, beautiful autumn breeze.
The Moretti estate had been completely renovated. The dark, intimidating security elements had been subtlely redesigned—blooming rose gardens replaced the harsh floodlight barriers, and a custom wooden playground with swings and slides had been built on the south lawn.
Inside the quiet sanctuary of the estate’s private library, Sophia sat by the bay window, reading a book.
The heavy oak doors opened, and Aleandro walked in. He was not wearing his suit or tactical armor. He wore a comfortable cashmere sweater and dark trousers, looking more relaxed than Sophia had ever seen him.
He walked over to the window, setting two cups of warm tea on the side table, and sat across from her.
"The federal court finalized Carmine Romano’s trial date this morning," Aleandro informed her gently. "He will be sentenced to life without parole. His syndicate has been completely dismantled."
Sophia set her book down, taking a sip of the warm tea. "And the men who were loyal to him?"
"They have surrendered their territories," Aleandro said. "The city is quiet, Sophia. For the first time in twenty years... there is peace."
Sophia looked out the window. Down on the sunny lawn, Emma was playing tag with a young golden retriever puppy Aleandro had bought her three days ago. Two security guards stood far near the tree line, smiling as they watched the little girl run across the grass.
"She hasn't asked about her old shoes once," Sophia said softly, a hint of sadness in her voice. "Sometimes I worry that giving her all this luxury will change her."
Aleandro reached across the small table, taking Sophia’s hand into his.
"Luxury won't change her," Aleandro said firmly. "Because she has you. You raised her in a one-room apartment above a laundromat, and you gave her more love, courage, and grace than all the money in this mansion could buy."
Sophia looked into his eyes, her heart beating faster. "And what about us, Aleandro? Where do we go from here?"
Aleandro stood up from his chair. He reached into his sweater pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined mahogany box.
He did not drop to one knee with corporate fanfare or dramatic flair. He simply sat on the edge of her chair, opening the box to reveal a simple, exquisite ring featuring a brilliant solitaire diamond set in pure platinum.
"Four years ago, I lost you because I was too weak to protect what mattered," Aleandro said, his voice filled with deep, sincere emotion. "I spent four years believing I was meant to live in darkness. But then a barefoot girl danced into my ballroom, and she brought you back to me."
He looked into her eyes, his hand steady.
"Sophia Miller... will you marry me? Not for the syndicate, not for the headlines... but because I love you with everything I am."
Sophia gasped, tears overflowing her eyes, spilling onto her glowing cheeks. She didn't hesitate for a single second.
"Yes," Sophia whispered, throwing her arms around his neck. "Yes, Aleandro!"
Aleandro held her tightly, burying his face in her hair, feeling a profound, peaceful completion he had sought his entire life.
Out on the lawn, Emma saw her parents hugging through the glass window. She let go of the puppy's leash and came running up the patio steps, her tiny feet pattering happily against the stone.

"Mommy! Daddy!" Emma cheered, bursting through the French doors into the library. "Are we playing the hugging game?!"
Aleandro laughed out loud, scooping both Sophia and Emma into his arms, lifting them up into the warm afternoon sunlight filling the room.
