Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The laughter in the grand ballroom had completely vanished.

Under the three glowing crystal chandeliers, three hundred of New York’s most powerful figures—billionaires, politicians, cartel bosses, and corrupt judges—sat frozen in awe.

Emma’s tiny, bare feet spun across the polished white marble. She turned three times with effortless grace, her faded cotton dress fanning out around her like a flower opening in the morning sun. Her joyful, ringing laugh echoed off the vaulted ceiling, completely shattering the cold, arrogant aura Valentina Romano had cultivated all evening.

The orchestra played with a quiet, solemn beauty, caught in the magic of the little girl’s unscripted dance.

Sitting on a chair near the servants' entryway, the stuffed rabbit sat with its bent ear, as if watching its small owner conquer the room.

Sophia stood near the edge of the floor, her hands pressed tightly over her mouth, tears brimming in her eyes. She felt the heavy, suffocating weight of two years of domestic servitude lifting off her shoulders. For two years, she had carried the secret alone. For two years, she had polished the floors of the Moretti estate, hiding her face, swallowing her pride, doing whatever it took to keep her daughter safe from the dark, violent world Aleandro Moretti ruled.

Aleandro did not look at Valentina. He did not look at the orchestra. His dark, penetrating eyes were fixed entirely on the three-year-old girl in the center of the floor.

His heart—a cold, iron organ that had not felt genuine warmth since his older brother’s murder six years ago—pounded heavily against his ribs. The way Emma pressed her lips together when spinning. The faint, distinctive star-shaped birthmark on the left side of her collarbone, visible through the loose neckline of her worn dress.

It was the exact same birthmark Aleandro carried. The exact same birthmark passed down through five generations of Moretti men.

A sudden, sharp gasp broke the spell.

Valentina Romano stood near the head table, her face flushed with a dangerous mixture of embarrassment and rage. The guests were whispering, smiling, and recording Emma on their phones. The housemaid’s barefoot child had not only outdanced the internationally trained prima ballerina—she had stolen the entire room.

"Enough!" Valentina’s voice cut through the air like a silver blade, sharp and shrill.

The violin shrieked to a halt. The orchestra froze.

Valentina forced a strained, brittle smile onto her face, though her eyes burned with hatred. "A delightful little performance. Very sweet, very childish. Of course, it was hardly dancing."

She reached for a silver tray resting on the head table, picking up two crystal champagne flutes pre-poured with vintage dom perignon.

"A deal is a deal, isn't it?" Valentina declared loudly, stepping toward Emma. "I promised one million dollars to anyone who outdanced me. Naturally, a toddler cannot hold a bank account, but I shall write a check to the estate's charity in her name."

Valentina offered one of the flutes toward Aleandro, who was walking toward her with a cold, unreadable expression.

"To our future, Aleandro," Valentina said softly, her hand shaking slightly as she raised her glass. "And to the entertainment of the evening."

Aleandro did not take the glass. He stood six feet away, his dark eyes locked on the amber liquid inside her flute.

"Valentina," Aleandro said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying register that made the surrounding bodyguards immediately drop their hands to their holstered weapons. "Where did those glasses come from?"

Valentina blinked, momentarily thrown off. "They... they were brought from the private bar by the head steward. Why?"

"That tray was intended for my table," Aleandro murmured softly.

"Aleandro, don't be absurd, everyone is watching," Valentina hissed under her breath. She raised the glass to her red lips and took a long, decisive swallow. "To the Moretti name."

She set the empty glass down on the table.

Then, she took two steps toward Emma.

Before Valentina could speak another word, her eyes opened unnaturally wide. Her hand flew to her throat. Her champagne flute slipped from her painted fingernails and shattered against the marble floor, spraying crystal and liquid across Emma's bare feet.

Valentina gasped, choking violently, as if all the oxygen in the ballroom had suddenly turned to ash. Her golden embroidered gown rustled wildly as her legs buckled.

"Valentina!" her father, Don Carmine Romano, screamed from the front row, rushing forward.

Valentina fell hard onto her knees. Dark, purplish veins began bulging across her pale neck and forehead. She reached a trembling hand toward Aleandro, her lips moving without sound, before she collapsed face-down onto the cold marble, motionless.

Chaos exploded through the ballroom.

Women screamed. Men shoved chairs aside, reaching for concealed firearms. The orchestra scrambled off the platform in terror.

"Poison!" someone shouted. "The Don’s fiancée has been poisoned!"

In the middle of the horror, three-year-old Emma stood frozen, staring down at the convulsing woman surrounded by glass shards.

"Emma!" Sophia shrieked, sprinting across the floor. She threw her body over her daughter, pulling Emma tightly into her chest, shielding the little girl's eyes from the terrifying sight.

"Seal the doors!" Richard Drake, the Chief of Security, roared into his radio. "Nobody enters, nobody leaves! Secure the Don!"

Four armed Moretti enforcers instantly formed a protective ring around Aleandro. But Aleandro did not move away. He walked calmly through his men, stepping over the shattered glass, stopping right in front of Sophia and Emma.

He looked down at the woman kneeling on the floor, clutching a terrified child.

"Look at me, Sophia," Aleandro commanded softly.

Sophia slowly raised her head. Her face was deathly pale, tears streaming down her cheeks. "I didn't... I didn't do anything, Mr. Moretti! Please, I was just picking up her shoes!"

Aleandro’s dark eyes shifted from Sophia’s face to the tiny girl weeping against her apron. He reached down with his gloved hand, gently moving the collar of Emma’s faded dress just half an inch to the side.

There it was. The star-shaped mark.

Aleandro’s chest tightened so hard he could barely draw breath. Four years ago, during the bloody turf war with the Irish syndicate, Sophia had been his private secretary. One dark, desperate night when they were trapped in a safehouse while under fire, comfort had turned into passion. The next morning, she had vanished without a trace, leaving behind only a resignation letter.

He had searched for her for six months before believing she had fled the country. He had never known she was pregnant. He had never known she had returned to his own home under a false name, hiding in plain sight as a housemaid to keep their daughter fed.

Before Aleandro could speak, Richard Drake rushed forward, holding a black velvet tray from the private serving station.

"Don Aleandro!" Drake barked, his face grim. "We swept the kitchen area immediately. In the servant's locker room, inside Locker 14—registered to Sophia Miller—we found an open bottle of concentrated potassium cyanide and three unused silver vials!"

The entire room went dead silent.

Carmine Romano, standing over his daughter’s lifeless body, looked up with eyes filled with bloodthirsty fury. He pointed a trembling, diamond-encrusted finger at Sophia.

"You!" Carmine roared. "You jealous little rat! You poisoned my daughter because she embarrassed you!"

"No! No!" Sophia screamed, shaking her head hysterically as two heavy guards stepped forward and grabbed her arms, pinning her against the floor. "I don't even have a key to Locker 14! I swear on my life! I don't know what cyanide is!"

"Take her!" Carmine demanded, drawing a snub-nosed revolver from his jacket. "Execute her now!"

"Touch her," Aleandro’s voice echoed across the quiet ballroom, colder than death itself, "and you die where you stand, Carmine."

Aleandro stepped between Carmine’s gun and the crying maid.

He looked down at Emma, who was reaching her tiny arms out from the floor, crying for her mother.

Aleandro knelt down. For the first time in his cold, ruthless life, the feared Mafia Don picked up a weeping child, cradling her against his bespoke suit.

"Daddy..." Emma whimpered softly into his neck, her tiny hands clutching his lapel.

The word hung in the air like a thunderclap.

Aleandro looked up at his security team and his enemies, his eyes burning with a terrifying, ancient rage.

"She stays with me," Aleandro declared, his voice cutting through the panic. "And anyone who touches Sophia will answer to my blade."
