Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Shadows

The private master suite on the third floor of the Moretti mansion was a fortress within a castle.
Reinforced steel plates lined the mahogany walls, bulletproof glass protected the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the estate’s vast gardens, and a state-of-the-art surveillance monitor displayed sixteen security angles of the perimeter.
Sophia sat on the edge of the king-sized bed, gently stroking Emma’s curly hair as the little girl slept.
The room was filled with luxury—silk sheets, rare artwork, gold-trimmed furniture—yet to Sophia, it felt like a golden cage. Downstairs, the house was surrounded by armed men. Outside the gates, the dark threat of a syndicate war hung in the heavy night air.
A soft, rhythmic knock sounded at the heavy oak door.
Three taps, a pause, two taps. It was the passphrase code Aleandro had given her.
Sophia walked cautiously toward the door. "Who is it?"
"It’s Drake, Miss Miller," a muffled voice answered from the hallway. "The Don sent me to check the balcony locks."
Sophia reached for the handle, then paused. Her heart gave a sudden, violent thud.
Something was wrong.
Richard Drake had been with the Moretti family for twelve years, but he always referred to her as "Sophia" or "the housemaid." He had never called her "Miss Miller."
Sophia stepped back from the door, her eyes darting around the room. Her gaze fell on the floor-level reflection of the hallway mirror visible under the small gap beneath the heavy door.
In the reflection, she saw two pairs of boots. Neither belonged to the estate’s guards who were supposed to be standing watch. The carpet outside the door was stained with fresh, dark drops of blood.
Her guards were already dead.
"Miss Miller? Open the door please," the voice urged again, dropping its polite tone.
Sophia didn't answer. She ran softly to the bed, scooped the sleeping Emma into her arms, and backed toward the private bathroom connected to the suite.
BOOM!
A breaching charge exploded against the lock of the master bedroom door. Wood splinters flew through the air as the heavy oak door was kicked open.
Two men wearing black tactical masks and unmarked uniforms rushed into the bedroom, suppressed submachine guns raised.
Directly behind them walked Dr. Victor Vance—the Moretti family’s long-time chief medical consultant and personal physician. He was holding a small silver briefcase, his silver hair neatly combed, his eyes cold and devoid of emotion.
"Search the room!" Dr. Vance ordered smoothly. "Find the child and the girl! The boss wants them eliminated before Aleandro returns from the cellar!"
Inside the bathroom, Sophia locked the thick marble door and dragged a heavy brass vanity bench against the handle. Her hands were shaking uncontrollably, but her maternal instincts were operating on pure adrenaline.
Emma woke up, her eyes wide with fear, staring at her mother in the dim bathroom light.
"Mommy?" Emma whimpered. "Is it a bad dream?"
"Shh, baby, shh," Sophia whispered, pressing a kiss to the little girl's forehead, hiding her behind the thick marble bathtub. "Mommy is right here. Stay under the tub. Don't make a sound."
BANG! BANG!
Heavy gunshots slammed into the bathroom door lock. Sparks flew from the brass fixture.
"Sophia!" Dr. Vance’s voice called out from the bedroom, slick with false sympathy. "Don't make this difficult, my dear. You were never meant to be part of this. You were just supposed to take the fall for Valentina’s death! If you step out now, I promise your death will be painless."
"Why?!" Sophia screamed from behind the door, trying to buy time, praying Aleandro would hear the commotion. "Why are you doing this, Dr. Vance?! You served the Moretti family for twenty years!"
Dr. Vance chuckled—a dry, bitter sound. "Twenty years of patching up criminal thugs while Aleandro hoarded billions! Carmine Romano offered me fifty million dollars and control of the pharmaceutical shipping lines once Aleandro was dead! But then you brought that bastard child into the ballroom tonight! If Aleandro acknowledges her as his legal heir, the Romano claim vanishes! The kid has to die, Sophia!"
THUD!
The bathroom door bowed inward under a heavy kick.
Sophia looked around desperately. The bathroom window was small, leading out onto a steep, wet stone ledge forty feet above the courtyard.
She couldn't jump with Emma. They would both die.
She grabbed a heavy crystal perfume bottle from the vanity counter, smashing it against the marble sink, holding the jagged glass stem in her right hand.
"Over my dead body," Sophia whispered through her teeth.

The bathroom door burst open. The primary assassin lunged into the room, raising his silenced pistol.
Sophia screamed, lunging forward with the jagged glass bottle, aiming directly for his throat.
