Chapter 4 - The Healing Process

The weeks that followed were the most difficult of Richard Hawthorne’s life. He withdrew from his company, ignoring board meetings and multi-billion dollar mergers. His focus was entirely on the boys.

Emily became the gatekeeper. She established a strict routine that excluded Richard at first, only allowing him to participate as he proved himself. She saw the way he struggled—the way his hands shook when he tried to feed them, the way he panicked when they had nightmares.

One evening, while the boys were finally asleep, Richard found Emily in the library, reviewing their medical reports.

"I didn't know," he said softly, standing in the doorway. "I was so blinded by her... I thought I was giving them a mother. I thought I was giving them stability."

"You were giving them a trophy, Richard," Emily replied, not looking up from the papers. "You were building a life that looked perfect on the cover of a magazine. You never asked them what they wanted. You never asked them how they felt. You paid people to raise them, and when you finally decided to include someone, you chose someone who looked good on your arm, not someone who was good for your heart."

Richard sat down, the weight of his fortune seemingly crushing him. "How do I earn their trust back? How do I earn yours?"

"You don't," Emily said. "Trust isn't earned by words. It’s earned by presence. Stop being a billionaire. Start being a father. Take off the suit. Go into the mud with them. Let them see you bleed, and let them see you protect them when it's not convenient."

Richard nodded, a new resolve setting into his jaw. That night, he didn't sleep in the master suite. He slept on the floor of the playroom, guarding the door.
