Chapter 9 - The Firing Squad Dinner

The grand dining room of the Carranza estate was dressed in absolute luxury for the evening. Crystal chandeliers cast brilliant light across a table set with silver and fine china. The windows looked out over the stormy ocean—a poetic echo of the night Matthew and Elena had first met.

Arthur Ambrose sat across from Matthew, looking smug and untouchable in his tailored dinner jacket. To his left sat Director Thomas of Federal Maritime Security, and to his right sat Minister Vance of Defense. Both officials were enjoying Matthew's finest vintage wine, completely oblivious to the tension in the room.

"Matthew, your hospitality is unmatched," Ambrose said, raising his glass with a patronizing smile. "But let’s stop dancing around the real reason we're here. We are all men of the world. We know that the northern deep-water corridors are a matter of national security—and immense commercial value. I believe your lovely new wife, Elena, possesses the rights to those corridors. I am simply offering a generous partnership to ensure those routes are managed by experienced hands."

Elena, sitting directly next to Matthew, looked at Ambrose with a cold, unyielding gaze. "The rights belong to the Carranza Group, Mr. Ambrose. And they are not for sale, nor are they open for partnership with a criminal."

Ambrose’s smile vanished, his eyes flashing with an ugly, patronizing anger. "Careful, young lady. You're sitting at a table with the men who write the laws of the sea. One word from Director Thomas here, and your husband's ships won't even be allowed to leave the docks."

Director Thomas shifted uncomfortably in his seat, looking at Matthew. "Now, Matthew, Arthur does have a point. We want to keep things running smoothly. A prolonged regulatory audit on your fleets would be... inconvenient for everyone."

Matthew set his wineglass down with a soft, deliberate click. The sound was small, but it commanded the immediate attention of everyone at the table.

"Christopher," Matthew called out quietly.

The double doors opened, and Christopher entered, carrying a sleek digital tablet. He placed it directly in front of Minister Vance and Director Thomas.

"What is this?" Minister Vance asked, squinting at the screen.

"That is a verified digital ledger detailing forty-two separate wire transfers from a shell corporation registered to Arthur Ambrose directly into your private family trust funds over the last three years," Matthew stated, his voice flat and dead calm. "Furthermore, the secondary files contain satellite coordinates, container serial numbers, and manifest logs for three shipping vessels owned by Ambrose Logistics that are currently carrying unregistered military hardware through the northern channels. In fact, naval interceptors—acting on an anonymous tip backed by satellite imagery from my private network—boarded those vessels exactly twenty minutes ago."

Director Thomas stood up so fast his chair screeched against the marble floor. His face was completely bloodless. "Matthew... this... this is..."

"This is an operational reality, Director," Matthew interrupted, his eyes shifting toward Arthur Ambrose, who had gone entirely rigid, his glass frozen halfway to his mouth. "Minister Vance, Director Thomas... you have two options tonight. You can either immediately execute the federal arrest warrants for treason, arms smuggling, and bribery against Arthur Ambrose, or you can join him in a federal cell by midnight. My legal team has already mirrored these files to the independent federal prosecutor's office. The trap is already sprung."

Ambrose slammed his glass onto the table, shattering the stem. "Carranza! You think you can destroy me? I will wipe you off the face of this earth!"

Before he could step away from the table, the grand doors burst open. Four armed federal federal marshals stepped into the dining room, their weapons drawn, led by an officer holding a stamped federal warrant.

"Arthur Ambrose," the lead marshal announced. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to traffic restricted military hardware, money laundering, and treason. Hands behind your back."

Ambrose looked around the room, realizing with a sickening horror that his political shields had completely dissolved. Director Thomas and Minister Vance were staring at the floor, refusing to even look at him to save their own skins. As the cold steel handcuffs clicked around his wrists, Ambrose was dragged out of the Carranza estate, his desperate threats fading into the sound of the ocean waves outside.

Matthew turned to the remaining officials, his expression severe. "Gentlemen, I suggest you return to your offices and prepare your letters of resignation before the morning papers hit the stands. Good night."

As the room cleared, leaving only Matthew and Elena alone amid the pristine luxury, Elena let out a long, deep breath. The last monster from her past had been completely, utterly eradicated.
